Wonyoungism is a lifestyle aesthetic that takes inspiration from the South Korean kpop idol; Jang Won-Young, who's the main visual and face of the kpop girl group IVE.
She's known for being incredibly beautiful, cute, and feminine. So the Wonyoungism aesthetic is all about being feminine, having a clean and healthy lifestyle, and being the best version of yourself you can be.
Wonyoungism is a mix of the clean girl and coquette aesthetics- both were very popular so it makes total sense why Wonyoungism is now popular.
And ultimately it kinda is just those two aesthetics mixed, but using Wonyoung as a face/representation of it.
Wonyoungism encourages a healthy lifestyle- themes such as skincare, diet, and exercise are a massive part of Wonyoungism-
(Having a good skincare routine and personal hygiene habits
Excercise such as Pilates, Yoga, and Mobility
Healthy eating and dieting)
Wonyoungism also puts emphasis on self care, which often ties into the health aspect of it since skincare, excercise, and healthy foods can all positively impact your mental health
Another big aspect is working hard- Wonyoungism is all about being the best version of yourself so studying, getting good grades, and working hard are all very common themes
And honestly simply put- Wonyoungism is about being the best version of yourself and femininity.
Wonyoungism is a motivational aesthetic and honestly the message is not bad at all,
Self love, self care, health, success
All very good things, and I think a lot of people can get motivated to better themselves with Wonyoungism,
I personally have benefited from a mindset that's simular to Wonyoungism, and have followed/done some of the Wonyoungism things that have really helped me on my journey to bettering myself. It's all good motivation and definitely has good intentions. As someone who is very stereotypically feminine I totally see the appeal of Wonyoungism, and it can be very possitive, motivational, and uplifting.
But when does the Wonyoungism mindset go to far
Sadly Wonyoung is one of those idols that is subjected to diet and weight restrictions- so not only does this body and face rely on severe and unhealthy diets-
Wonyoung also has personal trainers, and access to beauty treatments such as facials and plastic surgery (Wonyoung herself has been speculated to have gotten plastic surgery)
Normal people do not look like this
And along with that it comes with fatphobia, bc the "healthy" aspects of Wonyoungism go along with the "healthy = skinny" thing which is not true at all-
Plus size and fat people can be perfectly healthy- do they probably have to be more cautious about things? Yes. But does that mean they're not healthy? NO!
Despite the fact there's health risks involved with having more body fat/mass, being fat and big does not automatically make a person healthy.
Wonyoungism also just tends to be classist and ableist by nature, since it puts some emphasis on things that are expensive, and having expensive things- not a lot of people have the means for that
And it can be ableist since many disabled folks have difficulty with diet and exercise.
But the main thing is body issues
Simply put- Wonyoungism can be very toxic and problematic.
So, is Wonyoungism bad? Not necessarily, like I mentioned it can really help some people.
It's just important to not let an aesthetic control your life, use it as motivation but remember the problematic and toxic aspects and keep those away from you.
The themes of loving yourself and being the best version of yourself is a great message that positive and good, just keep the bad stuff away!!
