The following day at the usual time, Sam came to the counting house. He weaved around the desks towards his. As he did so, he noticed that Mr Goldbin was in his office. He didn't stop and went his desk. It took him a second to noticed it was cleared from the mounds of paperwork he had to do. Oh yeah, he was fired, no work for him today. However, there a was a simple piece of paper in the middle ofhis desk.
"What now, more adventures?" He said to himself as examined the piece of paper on his desk.
The scrap piece of paper had a simple message.
Come to my office.
Mr. Goldbin
"Oh no, what now?" he thought to himself as he approached his boss's door.
He thought about what his boss had to say. It was either more chastising or did his boss change his mind. Now his boss changing his mind Sam knew it would be a slim chance. Mr. Goldbin is known to stick to his ways and opinions with little variance.
Sam was a little nervous as he approached the door. He knocked and a response came from the other side. He opened the door and found Mr. Goldbin behind his desk as usual and with his usual organized piles of books and papers on his desk. There were the usual straight back chairs facing the desk. Two gas lamps stuck out on opposite walls. These artificial lamps were not the only source of light. There was a large paned window which was behind Mr. Goldbin. Books and filing drawers lined the walls. It was a typical office. Mr. Goldbin peered over his log book.
"Mr. Joven," Mr. Goldbin greeted Sam cheerfully.
"How are you, sir?" Sam asked.
"You know," Mr. Goldbin replied spritely waving his arms over the organized papers and books on his desk, "you know facts and figures. They climb up, they go down, problems come in and they go. In short, there is a lot that goes on."
"I see," Sam responded, a little shocked at the cheery attitude of Mr. Goldbin. Obviously never seeing this part of his employer.
"You need something?" Mr. Goldbin quickly asked, surprising Sam.
"Well, sir," Sam started hesitantly, "Your note told me to see you."
"Note? What note?" Mr Goldbin muttered to himself furrowing his brow. Then with a quick look at Sam's panicked face, he said with an exaggerated gesture of recognition, "Oh that note! Please sit down Sam."
Sam takes a seat on one of the straight back chairs with an audible groan and creak from the wooden chair.

"Now Sam," Mr. Goldbin said, leaning forward and interlocking his thin sinewy fingers, "I had a hard and fitful night last night. And after turning over what you have said and been through, I have considered you a worthy candidate as a business partner."
"You mean?" Sam questioned after finding it hard to believe his trustworthy ears. "Could it be possible, I am the person you have been looking for?"
"Yes, sir!" Mr. Goldbin confirmed giving his desk a playful smack, "A partnership with me, I have not found one so trustworthy and honest as you have been. I have nearly sunk into despair in finding a business partner with such qualities in others as you have shown me. You have shown me that I can rely on you to get the job done and be willing to tell the truth no matter how strange the story."
Sam was astonished and flabbergasted.
Mr. Goldbin concluded, "Since your materials and equipment have been moved to your new office, you may take the day off to relax. But I will be expecting you at 8 o'clock sharp, if not I may even reconsider my offer."
A feather could have knocked the baffled Samuel Joven. He thanked and thanked again and went out of the office. As soon as Sam got out of the Goldbin's counting house, he gave a large woop and threw a fist in the air. He then coughed, straightened his jacket and quietly walked back to his humble apartment a block away from the counting house.
