"How much longer?" I asked Ed. We were on a train, heading to Farmlingham. We had already been on the train for a long time. Even though I wasn't keeping track of time, I knew it was a long time.
We had spent that time talking about Ed's family. Ed's dad, John, was an art curator, and Ed said he would love my art. Ed's mom, Imogen, was a culture publicist, and in Ed's opinion, she was quite boring. Ed's older brother Matthew was an extreme asshole and was mean to Ed as a kid, which explained why Ed was an asshole too. Then there was Ed's grandma, who lived alone on a little farm in the countryside. His grandpa died when he was little, but Ed's grandma always had company over so she was never lonely.
"Not even ten minutes now." Ed said, pulling me from my thoughts. He looked out the window. I narrowed my eyes and looked at my feet.
"You said that fifty years ago..." I mumbled. Ed gently elbowed me. I glared at him. His eyes were soft and sweet.
"I mean it this time." He glanced at the window. "Look!"
As Ed pointed out the window, I saw the train station in the distance. "Okay fine." I said. Ed grabbed my hand and kissed it.
"I'm so glad you're here with me Reggie." He whispered. I leaned against him.
"I'm glad I'm here too." I replied. Ed squeezed my hand. "So, how are we getting you your Grandma's house?" I asked. Ed shrugged. Then his eyes widened.
"I know how." He said. Before I could say anything, the train pulled to a stop. "Let's get off." Ed said, standing. I sighed and stood up too.
Ed and I stepped out of the train. "Welcome to Farmlingham!" He exclaimed. All I could see was the train station. I gave Ed a confused look and he smiled. "Just pulling your leg. Come on." He lifted his bag higher on his shoulder and lead me towards a bench where an elderly woman was sitting.
"Teddy!" She exclaimed when she saw Ed. She lifted herself to her feet and extended her arms towards Ed. He dropped his bag and was pulled into a hug by this woman.
"Grandma! Its wonderful to see you!" He said. I stood awkwardly behind Ed, picking up his bag from the snow. The woman spoke to Ed. He laughed. Then he looked back at me. "Oh, Grandma, I love for you to meet my girlfriend, Reggie." I shot a glance at Ed. I'm his girlfriend?
"Reggie?" Ed's grandma said. "That's a bit odd." I smiled, gently.
"My real name is Regina, but I don't fancy it. Everyone calls me Reggie." I explained. Ed's grandma nodded.
"If you fancy Reggie, than that is who you shall be." She said, reaching out to me. "You can call me Grandma." Before I could react, Grandma grabbed my arm and pulled me in for a hug.
"Uh..." I looked at Ed, who shrugged and smiled. "Okay Grandma." I couldn't move my arms so I just stayed how I was standing.
When Grandma let go, she said, "Alright you lot. How long will you be staying?"
"Well, its Saturday, Grandma. Christmas Eve is on Monday. So we'll go home..." Ed started, glancing at me. "The day after Christmas?" I nodded.
"Sounds ace to me." I said, sliding a bit of British slang into the conversation. Grandma gave me an odd look.
"You're an American. How long have you been in Great Britain?" She asked. I told her how long and told her why. "That's wonderful. Now," she looked at her watch, "let's be getting home so I can get some grub into your bellies." She poked Ed's slightly chubby belly. "Have you been eating alright Teddy?" Ed nodded.
"I've been eating what I can, Grandma." He replied. She laughed.
"Yet ya still put on some weight lad?" She laughed to herself and turned. "Come on then." I glanced at Ed. He chuckled and we both followed Grandma out of the station.
She lead us to a really tiny car. And by "tiny" I mean tiny. Granted, it could fit four people... Probably. But Ed would be quite squished in it.
Grandma unlocked the doors and got into the driver's seat. I opened the door for the seat behind her and got in. Ed sat in front, next to Grandma. As soon as she started the car, classical music was playing on the radio.
"I love a good bit of Bach. Don't you?" She asked. Ed nodded. I shrugged.
"I really only listen to Green Day or Maroon 5 or any pop artist out there." I said. Grandma let out a huff of breath, as she drove the car down the road.
"This is why I like you, Teddy." She said. "You listen to classics. Not the rubbish they have out there now!" I looked down at my feet, ashamed.
"Well, I do listen to some of Reggie's music, Grandma." Ed said. I looked up. He was looking back at me, clearly apologizing for Grandma's rudeness. Grandma let out another huff of breath.
"Oh, Teddy." She said. "Its all muck and rubbish!" Ed stared at me for a moment more, then looked at Grandma. The car turned a corner and I shifted slightly with the movement.
"I'm a singer, you know, Grandma." He said. "I sing this rubbish."
"Oh but your rubbish is not rubbish!" She replied. "Your one song... Way Home? I think that's what its called... I like that one." Ed looked at the ceiling of the car, which was an inch away from his face. I felt bad for him, being so tall.
"Well, I once heard a story about a run-down home where a man and his thought lived all alone." Ed started singing. I smiled. I loved it when he sang. I noticed Grandma chuckling from the driver's seat.
As Ed continued to sing, I imagined the man in the song. He lived in a tiny broken shack all by himself. His children grew up and left him. His wife... I think she left him too. But only because he didn't love her. I felt bad for that man too.
"That was wonderful!" Grandma exclaimed when Ed finished singing.
"Thank you." He said. He turned and looked at me. "What did you think, Reggie?" I opened my mouth to reply, but Grandma kept talking.
"That is one of my favorites Teddy. You'll have to sing it again, later!" She said. Ed looked over at her.
"Grandma, don't be rude." He said.
"But I was complimenting you! That isn't rude!"
"I was asking Reggie what she thought."
"She probably loved it too. Now will you-"
"Grandma!"
I sat in the back seat, listening to the two of them argue. It was starting to get overwhelming. So I put my headphones on and listened to a song on my CD player.
"Basket Case" by Green Day came on. Just what I need. A song about me.
Hey guys! That was chapter twenty-three! Ed's grandma has the personality of a lot of old women that I know. She is stubborn as a mule! XD Also, I am going on a trip for a few days and won't be updating until Monday. So please be patient :) Anyways, vote, comment, and follow if you want!
