How interesting can a commoner's life be? How interesting is it supposed to be? Is it even meant to be interesting? These questions can never have definitive answers because they are determined by the individual commoner's perspective. The answer lies in their own sense of self-satisfaction—whether they perceive their life as interesting or not.
As for you, the answer teeters between neutrality and a solid maybe. At 23, a single, working aunt to a six-year-old girl, you find your life to be far from intriguing. It is, instead, a mix of stress, inevitability, and the delicate balance of relationships, responsibilities, and love.
--
"Imoya!" Your dream-slash-sleep-slash-thoughts-slash-hybrid reverie is rudely interrupted by the tiniest disruption in your life, Ho Yeon—your late sister and brother-in-law's only daughter.
"Ho Yeon-ah, shut it," you plead, turning to face the other side of the bed while using your arm as a makeshift shield over your exposed ear.
"Imoya, it's already 8!" Ho Yeon announces, louder this time, breaking through your fragile barricade of sleep.
"Already?" your groggy voice murmurs into the air.
"You're going to be late for work," she declares with urgency, trying to jolt you into action. It's not too late yet, though—breakfast can always be sacrificed to buy a few extra minutes.
As for Ho Yeon, the little whirlwind eats less than an ant—or, to be more precise, like a bird. Even a glass of milk feels like a full breakfast for her.
"Imoyaaaa!" she wails. This niece of yours is truly a walking, talking headache.
"Alright, I'm up." You surrender, tossing the blanket off and dragging yourself out of bed to face the morning chores.
--
By 8:45, you're in the kitchen, hastily munching on a leftover piece of toast from yesterday. Meanwhile, Ho Yeon, as usual, struggles to finish one measly glass of milk.
Partly because she eats like a bird, and partly because she's glued to the television, watching TXT on screen.
"Stop ogling those guys and put on your shoes. We're running late," you complain, swallowing the last bite of toast and rinsing your mouth with water.
"What's ogling, Imoya?" she asks, making you realize (yet again) the pitfalls of using adult vocabulary in front of a six-year-old.
"Just hurry up!" you snap, ignoring her question and rushing over to turn off the television.
"Noooo!" she squeals in protest, devastated that her precious screen time has been cut short. Her so-called "oppa" should really be labeled ahjussi for a six-year-old, but you keep that observation to yourself.
--
After a mini-episode of squeals and dramatic pouting, you manage to drag her out and head to school.
"Imoya, did you know they're organizing fan-dates for lucky fans? I really hope I can go with Soobin oppa!" she gushes, her excitement bubbling over.
"You're too young to be going on dates," you reply, shaking your head in disbelief.
"But I'm so excited, Imoya! The results come out tomorrow morning," she chirps, though her enthusiasm does little to move you. Right now, your priority is dropping her off at school and catching the bus to make it to work before 10.
"Bye, Yeon-ah! See you at 6!" you call out as her homeroom teacher ushers her into the school building. Without missing a beat, you dash to the bus stop and secure a seat, relieved that you'll make it on time.
--
"How's the parenting life treating you?" Yoo Jin, your ever-cheerful and unabashedly gay friend, teases as you slide into your seat moments before your manager arrives.
"Take a good look. The answer's staring you in the face," you retort with dripping sarcasm, earning a hearty laugh from him.
Noticing the manager approaching to check attendance, Yoo Jin hurriedly retreats to his desk, which is conveniently right next to yours.
"Excellent! I see my team is assembled on time," your manager announces proudly, prompting a sigh of relief to escape your lips.
"That was a close one," Yoo Jin whispers conspiratorially, and you respond with a nonchalant look that says, Meh, no big deal.
For now, you've cleared one checkpoint in the day's marathon. The next one? Not until 6 p.m. Until then, you're holding steady. Or at least, steady enough.
