Once she reached the showers, Perry started tearing off her soaked clothes, not caring who was around to watch. Her movements were sharp, almost violent, as she peeled off the drenched fabric, shivering from the chill and the adrenaline still pumping through her veins.Minho, having felt a twinge of guilt after the river incident, had started to run after her, hoping to genuinely apologize this time. But as he rounded the corner and saw Perry in the process of undressing, he skidded to a halt, his eyes wide.
He quickly averted his gaze, his cheeks flushing. "Uh, Perry," he called out awkwardly, trying to keep his voice steady. "I just wanted to say sorry... we didn't mean to upset you like that."
Perry jumped a little at his voice. "Here to scare me again?" She scoffed, her shirt completely off and pants at her knees. It was a little mortifying, having to talk to Minho half-naked.
"Newt was saying it might be because you're on your 'lady days' so I'm not taking it too personally," he scratched the back of his neck. His words made Perry flush in a mixture of anger and embarrassment. "My what?"
But when Minho went to speak again, she interrupted him, "It- it doesn't matter, I overreacted, just go away now," Perry told him, though she didn't really seem remorseful, just shaken. Minho hesitated for a moment, seeing the mix of emotions on her face, but he respected her request and left, the same odd feeling from breakfast rushing back to him.
As Perry finished undressing and stepped under the cold spray of the shower, she let out a deep breath. The icy water was bracing, helping to clear her mind and soothe her raw nerves.
Perry wasn't very hungry after the interaction, but she knew Frypan would be mad if she didn't eat. Besides her hair now being soaking wet, only her ego was bruised. She sat down between Winston and Gally, who both looked at her a little surprised but knew better than to say something.
"I caught some fish earlier for you, Winnie," Perry murmured as she took a bite of the chicken breast that Frypan had saved for her.
"Thanks, man—I mean, lady?" Winston stuttered, causing Perry to chortle.
Suddenly, someone from the end of the table tapped their knife against their glass. Everyone turned their head to see it was Newt. "Me, Minho, and Ben were thinking about maybe having someone else become a Runner," he announced pensively, sparing glances at Nick and Perry because he hadn't talked to them about this before, even though he knew he was supposed to.
The two leaders of the Glade looked at each other, Nick's eyebrows raised and Perry's furrowed. "Woah, Newt, when did we discuss this? Because I don't remember agreeing to it," Nick said with a controlled smile, but everyone could tell he was a little upset. Perry didn't try as hard to hide her frustration.
"Look, we," Minho motioned to him and the two blond runners, "already know most of the Maze and trust each other to travel alone. Might as well add someone to the team," he explained, with Newt and Ben nodding along.
"So, if anyone has someone they want to nominate..." Ben drew out, the Gladers looking at each other.
"Leo," Perry said, the small boy's head shooting towards her in terror.
"Me?" His small voice confirmed shakily. The girl nodded.
"Yeah, I mean, he's quick, strong," she started listing, "not sure how smart he is since he chooses to work with Gally, but it's his own choice," Perry concluded, most of the boys looking at her thoughtfully.
Nick leaned over to see the young boy. "Well, Leo, what do you say?" he asked. The boy with the glasses looked straight to Gally for approval, and when Gally nodded, Leo agreed.
"Yeah, I'll do it!" Leo cheered, the rest of the boys lifting him up in triumph.
As everyone settled down and got ready for bed, Nick motioned for the Runners, himself, and Perry to talk. Once they were sitting around a circle on tree stumps, Nick finally scolded them.
"You cannot just announce something like that without talking to me or Perry first. You know that, right?" Nick said sternly, his smile from before long gone.
The three other boys just looked down sheepishly.
"We aren't against adding more Runners, but it's not really our top priority right now," Perry told them. "Me and Nick are still having to help everyone out. Tony finally decided to help out Winston, but we don't have enough guys to just run around all day," she explained. This ticked off Minho.
"Just running around?" he questioned her. "We're running around in a Maze that changes constantly, with monsters that are moaning and groaning the entire time. But sure, that work is so easy compared to you just laying around in here!" he challenged.
Perry stood up and pointed a finger at him. "We do not just lay around!"
"Well then, what do you do, Perry?" Minho asked, cocking his head to the side. "Keep authority? Because your little 'democracy' isn't working very well if we are already revolting against you," he countered. When Perry didn't say anything and just stared at him with anger, he knew he had gone too far.
"Nick, you talk to them. I'm going to bed," she shook her head and didn't look back.
"Nice job, slinthead. She's even more mad at us now," Ben snickered, Nick eyeing him, signaling to shut up.
The leader sighed. "Just start with Leo tomorrow. I'll go and talk to her," he instructed, running after his friend.
Perry had climbed to the top of the watchtower she had helped build earlier that day. She heard Nick climbing up the ladder slowly. He was scared of heights, so the stable but shaking building made him queasy.
"You really had to hide up here, huh?" Nick asked with a scoff, eyes closed and back completely pressed against the wall.
"Didn't think you'd have the balls to actually climb up," Perry retorted, watching Nick smile a little at her joke.
"Minho was wrong, by the way. He's just acting weird," the leader of the Glade said. She just nodded silently, still mad from before.
"I just don't know why he's acting like this all of a sudden," Perry admitted. "It's annoying."
"Maybe he likes you?" Nick suggested, almost making Perry start howling with laughter.
"Maybe we should go back down. The heights are making you crazy!" She choked on her words with her own laughter.
Nick chuckled along too and squinted his eyes. "Yeah, probably," he looked at him with a smile.
"You should get to bed, Miss Democracy," he joked with a new nickname that made Perry smile.
