As I strolled back into the office from my lunch break, I overheard a coworker's remark: "It feels just like when Mr. Hayes Senior was in charge, and maybe a little better." A smug smile spread across my face as I basked in the unintended praise.

It was all thanks to a seemingly trivial decision I had made.

Taking a seat in Mr. Hayes' office, I barely had time to settle before he entered.

"You seem happy," he remarked, noting my grin.

"It's nothing," I replied nonchalantly, pretending to focus on my work.

After a few moments of silence, Mr. Hayes turned to me. "Ms. L/N, how would an office party sound?"

"Given the success of that huge project, it would be fantastic," I replied eagerly, seizing the opportunity to suggest further appreciation for the staff. "Showing your employees that you care. Oh, and perhaps you should consider giving everyone a bonus as well," I added, my tone filled with enthusiasm.

"Sounds fantastic," he responded with enthusiasm.

Following that decision, the date for the party was promptly set, and preparations began in earnest. Everyone pitched in to make it a success. When the day of the party arrived, I donned a lovely dress, though it felt a tad snug once again.

"This is the last time I let Sarah order my dress," I mutter under my breath as I stride into the office party, tugging at the snug fabric.

"Oh, you look lovely," Sarah exclaims, to which I roll my eyes in response.

"You ordered it in a size smaller," I accuse her, trying to adjust the dress.

"No, I ordered it in the perfect size," she insists, handing me a drink and pulling me toward her group of friends.

"And this here is the woman who single-handedly changed this office," Sarah proudly declares, showcasing to a cluster of familiar faces as if I've just won a Nobel Peace Prize.

"All I did was send an email," I muttered, feeling a bit overwhelmed by Sarah's praise.

"And that was far more than most of us," she countered, her support unwavering. As the night wore on, I found myself engaged in lively conversation with Jake and another colleague, both of whom seemed to have indulged in a few too many drinks.

However, my pleasant evening took a turn when I noticed Mr. Hayes staring in my direction.

"Please tell me he isn't looking at me," I whispered to Jake, who glanced over and confirmed Mr. Hayes's fixed gaze on my dress.

"I told you that man is in love with you," Jake remarked with a knowing smirk, earning a chuckle from the guy next to him.

Deciding to distance myself from the awkward situation, I excused myself and made my way to the punch bowl. But before I could fully escape, Mr. Hayes intercepted me.

"Ms. L/N, the dress?" he inquired, his tone carrying a hint of something I couldn't quite decipher.

"I know, Sarah ordered it way too small," I replied, attempting to brush off the uncomfortable exchange.

"Oh, that's not what I meant," he clarified, his eyes lingering on me in a way that made me feel uncomfortably exposed.

"Please tell me he's drunk," I silently pleaded, hoping for some explanation to alleviate the unsettling tension.

Please tell me he's drunk

"You look absolutely stunning. I would have made office parties a regular thing long ago if I knew you would wear that," Mr. Hayes complimented me, his tone suggesting something more than just professional admiration.

Is he flirting with me?

I wondered, feeling increasingly uncomfortable. Glancing around for assistance, I found Sarah lost in dancing and Jake preoccupied with dragging a guy into the bathroom.

I should report him for putting me in this awkward position, I thought fleetingly.

"Do I?" I replied coolly, attempting to mask my unease.

"Yes, you do. You look even better in person than on your page," he continued, his words sending a wave of dread through me, regretting ever making my social media profile public.

"But the thing I love the most is the fact you're just so... honest" he said, staring into my eyes.

May god strike me down right now

As the night wore on, Mr. Hayes's attention seemed relentless, despite my attempts to deflect it. I noticed Jake emerging from the bathroom, wiping his mouth, followed by the guy he was with.

Whore.

"Oh, uh, I need to talk to Jake about something," I blurted out, eager to escape the uncomfortable situation. Without waiting for a response, I hurried away, hoping Mr. Hayes would take the hint.

"Your boy toy is still staring at you," Jake remarked as I approached him.

"Let's not talk about boy toys when yours is zipping up his pants," I retorted, attempting to lighten the mood.

"Haha, very funny. But honestly, your man is staring into my soul," Jake noted, his words sending a shiver down my spine.

"It's weird. I think I'm gonna go," I announced suddenly, feeling overwhelmed by the situation. Just then, someone approached me.

"I can drive you home," Mr. Hayes offered, his tone tense.

"Oh, no thanks," I declined politely, noticing the glare he shot in Jake's direction, reminiscent of the animosity he displayed just days earlier.

Motioning for Sarah to join me, we quickly made our exit and got into Jake's car.

"What was that all about?" I asked, utterly bewildered.

"Honestly, I could feel the tension from him once you and Jake started talking across the room. You know half the room was dead silent, right?" Sarah pointed out, fastening her seatbelt.

"Out of fear or just nosiness?" I inquired.

"Both," she replied simply.

I sighed, feeling relieved that I wouldn't have to deal with any more of Mr. Hayes's uncomfortable advances.

"Well, at least I won't have to deal with any of this anymore," I remarked, realizing something. "Yeah, I reread the contract date again. It ends today."
