"You all looked good out there today, if we continue to play like this we will have this in the bag". "A special shoutout to you Jason, keeping playing like that, and we may just have a new MVP for the season," the coach said.

"Appreciate it coach" Jason responded.

"Even though Jason has been carrying this team a lot this season remember this is a team sport and everybody's effort is required, Are we clear?" the coach asked.

"Yes coach" we all responded.

"All right, that's what we are talking about, with spirits like that who can stop us in the finals? Hahahaha" the coach ramb;ed on while dismmising us. "All right boys, let's hit the shower" I responded as we all made our way off the court.

My name is Cory and I am eighteen years old basketball player, the dude the coach has been bragging about not too long ago is my best friend, we have been since elementary, and even though he can be hella annoying, I love him like my own brother.

He can be such a drag sometimes, worst because he takes pleasure in being a teacher's pet. We became close due to similar situations that we faced, both our dads weren't a part of our lives and I guess we both saw that as a way to be there for each other.

Out of the two of us, Jason has always been the one that stood out from our friend group, he just had a knack for being exceptional at everything he did and because of that I sometimes felt overshadowed by his achievements.

He gets bragged rather often at school and now I get to hear that at home as well because the basketball coach Todd, is dating my mom. Something I don't know how to feel about, I am happy that my mom has found love but couldn't it have been anybody but the coach of our team?

As soon as we were out of the showers and ready to go home, Todd stopped me to ask if I wanted a ride with him as he was stopping by the house to pick my mom up for a date night. Jason jumped up to say yes before I could even decide to accept or decline the offer. "All right, let me go grab my things, wait for me out by my car," Todd said but went off to his office.

"Why did you do that man," I said throwing a punch at Jason, "it must be cool having the coach as your stepdad" Jason laughed running from my punch. "Cool my ass, he is always on my ass about getting more practice in and using my free time to join him to scout new players and he is not my damn stepdad" I snapped at Jason and left him to go the car park.

"I'm sorry man, I shouldn't have accepted the offer on your behalf, you want me to say that we got somewhere to go and we will just catch the bus' Jason asked after jogging to catch up to me. "It's fine, I don't want my mom to nag me about it if I decline" I replied.

It didn't take long before Coach Todd came out of the building, and a few minutes after that we were making our way to my house. We drove mostly in silence, Jason being the one to break the silence due to his outburst from videos he was watching on my phone.

Ten minutes into the drive Todd asked," So do you two have anything fun planned for the rest of the evening, or should I say night seeing as Jason has quite the bag packed" "Uh yeah, we normally have sleepovers at each other house and this week its Corey's House, Ms. Jackson is already aware of it" Jason responded, while I snickered at his answer.

"That's great, reminds me of how me and my best friend used to be when we were around your age. Y'all didn't tell me what you were going to do though, is it a secret that this old man can't know" Coach Todd said looking at me through the rearview mirror, I shrugged off his question and left it up to Jason to provide an answer for his question.

"We are just going to have a game night and probably watch some movies as well, not a secret at all Coach Todd" Jason replied trying to be innocent knowing good and well that he would most likely be smoking or messaging one of his many admirers.
