Chapter 1: The reaping

Lunar was going tearing through her house having misplaced the one thing she was meant to keep track of. "Mom!! Have you seen my reaping dress" She shouts through the house knowing her mother will be upset at her. She realizes how right she was as she runs into her mother Nadia and sees her stern face

"Really Lunar. Again. We do this every year" She sighs and begins to help Lunar look. They look all over the house eventually finding it in her 8 year old sisters room. She's gotten into the habit of stealing Lunar's clothes even though they do not fit her. "Seriously Max you have to stop stealing your sisters clothes you can have them when she grows out of them."

"It's fine mom really." Lunar throws on her dress before quickly giving Max a kiss on the head "Bye Maxie" she runs out the door before she can hear a response. As she runs past her mom out the front door she sees Bellamy waiting for her "Come on idiot you are gonna be late" She quickly rushes down the front steps.

"Watch out for your sister Bellamy" Nadia shouts as they begin to quickly walk towards the reaping area. She walks along with all of the other children marching to see if they will be the ones who will be sentenced to death. Bellamy suddenly stops walking. "This is as far as I can take you" He says to her. Lunar gets a panicked look on her face. She has never gone to a reaping ceremony alone. This would be her first year without her brother there with her. He nudges her forward and she keeps walking. She hands her finger over to the peacekeeper as they prick her finger and take blood. "Next" The peacekeeper says shoving her slightly. She walks forward and finds her place among the rest of the girls her age. She stands next to her friend Cali and can feel the nerves radiating off of her.

"Everything will be fine Cal" Lunar says softly. Cal looks over at her with tears in her eyes and speaks in a shaky voice. "I have a bad feeling about this reaping Lu" Lunar reaches over and grabs her hand, trying to offer some type of comfort, as District 5's Escort Maxillian Copperworth takes the stage. He was dressed with a bright orange wig and an extravagant looking suit to match with his hair

"Welcome Welcome everyone to the reaping of the 68th annual hunger games" Maxillian says in his fake capitol accent. He does the whole speech about why the hunger games started and other stuff that no one cares enough to listen to. Before anyone can even realize it he is saying "As always we do our ladies first". He digs around in the bowl as if trying to find the perfect one. When he believes he's found it he pulls it out and walks to his microphone. It feels as though time stops as he opens that slip of paper. "Our Female tribute for district 5 is.." It's as though Lunar could feel it coming before it happened. Before he read out the words "Lunar Mayfield" she releases cal's hand and while showing no expression walks up to the stage. Maxillian puts a hand on her shoulder as if to say congratulations before moving onto the male tributes. Before she can even fathom what is happening she is shaking hands with her district partner Oliver Carr who is 12. Lunar is dragged into her room where she is to wait for people to come and say goodbye to her.  Lunar is pacing the length of the floor when the door comes flying open and a blur of red hair throws itself into her arms.

"No you can't leave louie, you can't leave me what am I supposed to do" Max has thrown herself at her sister and is hysterically sobbing in her arms. Bellamy walks in behind them and looks at his younger siblings in sadness. Lunar holds out an arm telling Bellamy to get in the hug. The siblings just stand there and cry for a few minutes before Bellamy finally gets his head screwed on straight. "You know what you're doing Luna you can do this you can win. This is what I've trained you for. Don't show weakness, but don't show all your strengths ". Lunar shakes her head at him unable to wrap her head around this

"I can't Bell. I can't kill people". He just wraps his arms around her. "You can" he whispers into her ear. She takes a deep breath and nods her head at him. Lunar grabs Max trying to push her away so she can look her in the eyes, but the little girl refuses to let go of her. "You can't go" Max whispers. Lunar hugs her tightly

"I'll be back Max." Max pulls away now to look her sister in the eyes. "I will win this. I will come back to you"

"Promise me" she says holding out her pinky finger. Lunar links her finger with her younger sister and kisses it. "I promise Max. I will win this. I'll win it for you". Max hugs Lunar one last time as the peacekeepers come in to tell them time is up. Bellamy grabs Max as she starts sobbing and refusing to leave saying she needs more time. Lunar calms her emotions as she begins to follow the peacekeepers out to the train. She knows how this part works. Keep up the facade. Don't show emotion. She repeats this mantra to herself as her Oliver and Maxillian walk towards the train. She lets out a sigh as the train doors close.

"Come come children. Let me give you the tour" Maxillian says as he leads them into one of the compartments. "This is the main viewing room this is where you will talk with your mentors and eat for the days we are on the train. Lunar your room is to the left and Oliver was it? Your room is to the right. Your mentors rooms are down the middle corridor now if you will excuse me." He walks out of the room just as another guy walks in. A taller man with brown hair. Lunar recognizes him as Jack Ringer winner of the 60th hunger games. He looks them both over almost sizing them up then finally introducing himself..
