I glanced down at the sheet in my hand, then slowly lifted my eyes to survey the classroom. This was it. Great. Smoothing a hand over my skirt, I walked in, scanning the rows for an empty seat. A girl with bright red hair, who looked like she belonged in a rom-com, sat beside a brunette who looked oddly familiar. Another girl with bright green hair and piercings sat next to someone else. My eyes darted around the room until they finally landed on a girl with dark features—and, lucky for me, an empty seat right in front of her.
I slid into the seat just as the classroom buzzed to life again. With my head resting in my palm, I tried to focus, but my thoughts drifted. My mind replayed that moment, the feel of his hands on my waist, the way his green eyes pierced through me, the brief seconds when we'd been so close. And then the thoughts I won't name evaporated, leaving only irritation in their wake. The nerve of him, blaming me for the whole thing. Sure, I'd bumped into him, but he was the one in the way. If anyone should be angry, it should've been me. Ugh. I really hoped I wouldn't see him again—because next time, I might just strangle him.
My brooding was interrupted by a light tap on my shoulder. I looked up to see the girl with dark features, who had been sitting in front of me.
"Hi!!" she chirped, almost bouncing in her seat.
"Um...hi, I guess," I muttered, unsure of what to make of her energy.
"I'm Nina," she introduced herself with a bright smile, holding out her hand.
"Leah," I answered, clearing my throat and shaking her hand.
Before I could say anything else, another voice cut in. "Hey, Nina, I'm Alya," a girl said in a warm tone and and either I was imagining it or it had an edge to it
"Oh, hi!!" Nina exclaimed, oblivious to the undercurrent.
"I heard your father is on the board. Must be nice, huh? Having everything handed to you," Alya said and no I was so not imagining the edge in her voice -her tone was all sugar and venom.
My spine straightened. "Watch your mouth," I shot back before I could stop myself. The tension between us was palpable, but just as I was about to add something else, the teacher walked in, and everyone scrambled to their seats.
Halfway through the lecture, I felt a soft tap on my shoulder. Turning around, I saw Nina nervously twisting a ring around her finger, clearly struggling with whatever she was about to say.
"Yes?" I asked, my voice a little sharper than I intended.
"Um... I just wanted to say thank you, you know, for standing up for me earlier," she stammered, her cheeks turning pink. "I—uh—really appreciate it."
I gave a slight shrug. "It wasn't a big deal. But next time, stand up for yourself. People like Audrey? They're not worth the energy."
Her eyes widened with surprise. "Yeah, you're right. I'll work on that. But... would you want to have lunch together?" She smiled hesitantly.
