The house was eerily silent when I arrived. The usual bustle of maids and staff was nowhere to be found. A sharp uneasiness crawled beneath my skin as I made my way inside, calling out.

“Where is everyone?” I demanded, my voice sharp.

One of the maids appeared from a hallway, her face pale and eyes avoiding mine. The words she spoke next made my blood boil, my heart pounding against my ribs.

“Sir… Madam was brought to the hospital. She fainted after an incident.”

And then, like a cruel echo, her voice lingered in my head. “I’ll make you pay this time very badly.”

Aylin.

My jaw clenched so hard it ached. She had dragged my mother into this. She had crossed the line.

Without wasting another second, I sped to the hospital. The sterile smell, the cold lighting, the beeping monitors — it all crashed down on me when I saw Mom lying unconscious on the hospital bed. Tubes connected to her fragile body, her face pale and drawn.

My chest tightened painfully.

“M-mom… wake up… please,” I whispered, my voice cracking as I gently took her hand.

That was when Dad entered the room.

“She’ll be alright soon,” he said calmly, but his face betrayed the strain he carried.

“I’m going to kill her,” I growled.

Dad stiffened. “Kill who?”

“Kim Aylin!” I snapped, glaring at him. “How dare she hurt Mom!”

“She didn’t know about Jihyeon’s condition,” Dad barked back. “And don’t forget — Jihyeon’s surgery is coming up. You still have to marry before that.”

I stared at him, disbelief crashing through me. “How can you say that? You’re asking me to marry the same woman who put Mom in this hospital?! I won’t do it!”

“You will,” he roared, his voice thunderous in the quiet room. “Or watch your mother stay like this forever.”

He stormed out, leaving me standing there, fury coursing through my veins. I turned back to Mom, brushing her hair off her forehead and pressing a kiss there.

“For you, Mom,” I whispered. “I’ll marry her. But she’s going to see a side of me no one’s ever seen. I’ll make her life a living hell.”

I left the room, anger still surging through me, only to stop dead in my tracks.

There she was.

Aylin.

She was quietly slipping away toward the staircase, her figure swallowed by the dim corridor.

My hands clenched into fists, and without thinking, I followed.

Up the narrow, dark hallway until I caught up. I grabbed her wrist, spinning her around to face me.
