Emily and Shorty looked at the priest from the Temple of Doom. Mola Ram raised two of the Seven Swords of Diya over his head, chanting and swinging them.
The earth trembled.
"What's he doing?" Shorty asked.
Emily shut her eyes and tilted her head. "He's speaking or chanting in an ancient language. I heard Dad speak it when we faced the other throne guardian."
"What's a throne guardian?" Shorty's son asked.
"Well, Shorter - a throne guardian is a supernatural creature or object that guards sacred space..." Emily explained. "They usually are cultural symbols of power - like snakes or bulls." She stared at the priest. "He's a throne guardian. The other was a snake. He's the bull. He's got horns."
"But what throne is he guarding?" Shorty asked.
Emily stared at the firelit skull across the chasm. "It's a throne of death. Priests are like treasure guardians - they walk the border of the seen and the unseen realms. The good ones stand in the gap advocating for their people - the bad ones take power and abuse their people."
"Like the apkallu?" Emily's daughter asked.
"Exactly like the apkallu," Emily agreed.
"The apkallu must have taken him and inhabited him," Shorty shuddered. "I watched them inhabit Edo and his ninjas. Second most terrifying thing I ever saw."
"What's the first?" Emily asked.
Shorty nodded to the chanting priest. "Him."
