The cold sharp wind howled through the trees as the rain subsided, leaving behind a damp chill that clung to the air. Jiwon and Jeonggukk sat beneath the overhang, their bodies still tense from the battle with the wolves, the adrenaline slowly ebbing from their veins. The ground beneath them was damp, cold, and unforgiving, but neither complained. They had survived, but the weight of that victory pressed heavily on them, mingling with the strange, unfamiliar sensation of being so exposed to one another.
Jiwon shifted uncomfortably, tugging at the edges of Jeonggukk's shirt that she had tied around her waist. She could still feel his eyes on her, though he made no move to look directly at her. The silence between them had grown thick, oppressive, with a tension that was no longer born of animosity but something far more complex, far more dangerous.
She glanced at him from the corner of her eye, her breath catching slightly in her throat. Jeonggukk's shirtless figure, gleaming in the pale light that filtered through the trees, was a stark reminder of the man's physicality. His muscles, taut and defined, seemed sculpted from stone, every movement precise, controlled. His skin, marred with faint scars from battles long past, told stories of violence and survival, of a life lived on the edge of death.
Yet now, in the midst of this wild, untamed forest, he appeared more human than she had ever seen him. Vulnerable, perhaps, but no less dangerous.
Jiwon swallowed hard, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of his shirt around her waist. The awkwardness of the situation was suffocating. She could still feel the sting of embarrassment, the humiliation of having her body exposed in such a way. But more than that, there was something else—a tension between them that went far beyond their previous animosity. It simmered beneath the surface, unspoken but palpable.
She cleared her throat, attempting to break the silence that had stretched too long.
"This is awkward," she muttered, her voice barely more than a whisper, though the words felt inadequate for the storm brewing inside her. "I didn't think we'd ever end up like this... in the middle of a forest, drenched, fighting off wolves, and—"
"And half-naked," Jeonggukk finished for her, his voice as cold and detached as ever, a prominent smirk plastered over his face, though there was an edge to it that made her stomach twist in knots.
Jiwon shot him a sharp look, though she found no malice in his words. Just cold, hard fact. Still, the bluntness of it made her cheeks flush with renewed embarrassment. She shifted again, feeling the shirt tied around her waist move slightly, the fabric clinging to her damp skin.
"Right," she said, trying to sound casual, though her voice wavered just slightly. "Half-naked with your shirt."
Jeonggukk didn't respond, his gaze distant, his eyes scanning the treeline as though waiting for the next threat to emerge. His silence was maddening, adding to the strange tension between them. For a man so used to commanding attention, he could be infuriatingly hard to read when he wanted to be.
