PARINIDHI

The air in my lungs was dwindling, each breath coming out in ragged gasps. Sweat trickled down my forehead, and my heart pounded furiously, feeling as if it might burst from my chest. The gun was aimed at me, making every second feel like an eternity.

"P-please, lower the gun," I pleaded, my voice shaking with terror. My lips trembled, barely able to form the words.

I didn't want to die—not now, not with our baby growing inside me.

Just moments before, I had been overjoyed, having seen those two red lines on the pregnancy test. Now, I faced a peril that could end my life in an instant.

I had been cursing myself the whole way to the Nirvana warehouse. Narendra Thapar had information about my mother's killer, but I had refused him and was about to end the call when he threatened to kill Anshika and Rahul.

I didn't know how they had ended up here, but I felt I had no choice but to come and protect them. When I arrived, the situation was even worse than I had imagined.

Anshika stood, gun pointed at Thapar, her anger and fear evident in her trembling stance. The sight only deepened my dread.

Thapar was directly in front of me, his gun unwavering. Rahul cowered beside me, paralyzed with fear.

"Dad, please lower the gun," Naina's voice quavered with fear. Her presence and her plea were confusing—what was she doing here?

Thapar didn't lower the gun but instead glared at Naina, his teeth clenched. "For your safety, I left you in London. What was the need to follow me here? Now that you're here, stay silent."

Naina's sorrowful expression did little to comfort me. Her apologies were empty when faced with such imminent danger. My life teetered on the brink, and every second felt like a countdown to my end if Thapar chose to pull the trigger.

"Bhabhi, you shouldn't have come here," Anshika said, her voice full of fear. Her grip on the gun was firm yet trembling. "I could have handled it. Even if something happened to me, at least you and Bhai would be safe."

Her words were a jolt to me. Her demeanor didn't match her age or the gravity of the situation. For a fleeting moment, I saw a reflection of Devansh in her.

I was so terrified that I could barely think. I fervently hoped Devansh wouldn't arrive, for his presence would only escalate the violence, and his fury would make things even worse once he saw the mark on my cheek.

The slap still stung, and Anshika had already retaliated by shooting Thapar in the leg. It seemed like she was determined to take Thapar down today.

Thapar's only means of escape was through me, so he pointed the gun at me. I initially thought he wouldn't kill me to save himself, but his eyes betrayed no fear of his own death. It became clear that his sole aim was revenge for Natalia's death.

"Please, listen to me. Neither Devansh nor I killed Natalia," I began to plead, but Thapar cut me off with another slap. His voice was icy with rage. "Don't you dare mention my daughter's name."

"Di!" Rahul cried out, but he remained frozen. Anshika, for my sake, stayed put, her finger on the trigger, her eyes pleading with me.

"What's the matter? Shoot me," Thapar taunted, his anger palpable.

Anshika's fear and anger were evident, but the gun remained pressed against my forehead, forcing her to hesitate.

With trembling hands, I touched my cheek, feeling the blood from the cut at the corner of my lips. Tears welled up as I saw the blood on my fingertips.
