The Reason

It was a morning like any other; nothing was out of the ordinary. I awoke to the sounds of Robert, my boyfriend at the time, screaming my name, "Sarah, get your ass out of bed! It's time for you to go to work!" Robert was a drunk and abusive man. If he didn't get what he wanted, he got angry. We've been together for about a year, and I moved in with him a few months ago after my parents died. I only moved in with him because there was absolutely nowhere else I could go. As I rushed out of bed to get dressed, I looked in the mirror and noticed that the bruises he put on me the night before were horrific. I was a master at covering my bruises and scars with makeup. After I put my makeup on and covered the bruises the best that I could, I rushed out the door. As I ran down the stairs and to the front gate, I took one last look at the house. The house was small. It was a one bedroom, one bath house with a small kitchen and living room. The outside bricks were cracking and falling apart, and the stairs needed a new paint job. The chain link fence that surrounded the house was rusted and barely functioned. About a year ago, I started working at Sherry's Diner. That is where I met Robert. As I set out on the 20 minute walk to work, I thought about possible scenarios that could happen. Maybe Donna will quit today, she's always complaining about how she hates her job. What would happen if Rick, the man who comes in everyday, decided not to show up? And lastly, the worst possible scenario, what if Karen got promoted to manager? I shivered at the thought of that. I couldn't stand the thought of Karen being manager. All she ever does is complain about how unfair her life is. She has no idea how lucky she has it. There is no way I could work with her everyday without going insane. I guess I had zoned out because before I knew it, I was standing in front of the diner. Only eight more hours to go, I thought to myself. I walked in and there were no customers. I saw Donna standing behind the counter filing her nails and looking bored as usual. The diner was never really busy. Even though it was in the middle of the city, it was under the interstate. I walked in and went to the back office to put my bag down. I grabbed an apron and tied it around my waist while simultaneously walking to the front towards Donna. Donna was an older woman, but not too old. She was maybe in her late 40's. She always had to keep herself groomed, hence why she was filing her nails. I walked over to the computer, which was also the cash register and I clocked in. I finished tying the bright red apron behind my back.

"So, I think today is going to be the day that I tell this place 'goodbye'," Donna said as she turned to me and put her nail file on the counter, "I just don't feel like I can do this another day. We don't get paid enough, there are no benefits, and let's face it, it's boring!" I looked at her with an unconvinced face.

"You say that every time you come into work," I said, obviously sounded annoyed, "What makes today any different from all the other times?" Donna gave me a sigh and walked away. A few minutes later, Rick came in, as usual. He sat down in his usual booth in the corner, and I got him his usual meal. Over the next couple of hours, a few more people came and went. About halfway into my shift, I went outside to take a smoke break. Before walking out the back door, I took off my apron and hung it up. I walked out the back door and sat on the stairs leading into the alleyway. I only took a couple of hits off my cigarette, and then I went back inside. I went into my purse and sprayed myself with my perfume so that I wouldn't reek of smoke. I put my apron on and went back to work. About thirty minutes before the end of my shift, a man came in. As soon as he came in, I realized how incredibly handsome he was. He sat down on the bar stool right in front of me. He was dressed nice in a red and black suit. His face was stubbly, and he had beautiful green and brown eyes. I went and grabbed a menu and walked back over to him. When I walked back over to him, he gave a little smile and said, "Hello darling." The sound of his British accent made me melt a little.

"Uh...Hello," I said, nervously, "What uh...what can I get you?"

"Just a cup of Joe," he replied. I walked over to the coffee maker, and Donna walked over to me.
