i drank too much of your silence

i said ‘i love you’ out loud,
i received a whisper back from you.

i thought what i heard was wrong;
maybe you just sighed, and my mind
mistaken it as words because i’ve gotten
used too much to your silence as response.
and ’cause of my thirst to hear your voice,
my brain resorted to making things up
because that’s the only way for me to
be sure that you’re with me.

i heard the words you didn’t say.
i heard the laughs you didn’t let out.
i heard you say ‘i love you too’,
but i was wrong.

it actually was
‘i don’t’.
