7/21/2030 : 5 months since the hoard.

"Anything here?" Jaren's voice called out from somewhere over the shelves.

"I've found a few cans of food, and some batteries" Spencer responded, standing up and dusting himself off. He looked around the store, the once clean and spotless shelves now rusty and broken, most scattered on the floor and no longer intact.

"This place has gone to shit" Jaren sighed, standing up as well and pulling his bag over his shoulder. "I haven't seen any bandages or medicine, lucky us" He mumbled sarcastically. Spencer returned his words with a frown.

"We all good in here?" Tubs, who was standing at the front doors of the small convenience store, asked. "Wil's filled the truck up, we have enough gas to reach the next city."

"Yeah, we're good" Spencer replied, walking over and handing the taller his bag. "Carry this will you?" Not waiting for a response he walked past, heading towards the truck parked out front.

"Piece of shit" Tubs grumbled light heartedly, tucking the bag of canned food under his arm and looking over at Jaren. "Coming?"

"Yeah, gimme a second I'll catch up."

Tubs nodded and headed out to the car. Jaren did one last sweep of the store, then walked towards the back. He opened the door and peeked inside, scanning the floor for anything useful. A growl caused him to jump back, and a biter leaped at him.

"Fuck-" He reached for the axe he carried with him but brought up nothing. " What the-" He had no time to react when the biter once again jumped him, causing the two to fall to the ground with a loud crash. Jaren brought his leg up and kicked the monster in the stomach, hopefully knocking it off. Instead, his foot went through it. Warm goo oozed from the large hole now in the biter's stomach. The stench filled Jaren's nose and he had to swallow down bile building up in his throat.

The creature growled and snapped its teeth, trying to claw at the boy beneath it.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck..." Jaren tried once again to push it off but his attempts were useless. Suddenly the sound of footsteps behind him filled his ears and the zombie let out one last growl before the handle of a shotgun was brought down on it's skull. More of the goop splattered on Jaren's face and he froze.

"Any injuries?" Cleo asked, using his foot to push the limp body of the biter off Jaren.

"I'm good, grossed out, but good" He said, standing up and using his sleeve to wipe the black goo off his face. "Those things smell like shit."

"Agreed" Cleo nodded, "The other's are waiting, lets get a move on."

Jaren followed the jewel out of the store and to the car, where the rest of the group were loading up a few last things.

"You good Jaren?" Lia asked, concern written on her face.

"Yeah I'm fine, stray biter attacked me"

"So that's what that noise was" Wil hummed.

"And you didn't think to check on me?" Jaren replied, hand moving to his chest. "Glad to know im appreciated" He said, mock hurt in his tone.

"Oh shut it" Wil said with an eyeroll.

"Can you two stop bickering? We're losing daylight" Tubs informed, getting into the truck.

"Oh sorry Mr. Serious" Wil mumbled under his breath, getting into the driver's seat.

The truck came to a stop in the empty parking lot, the moon visible in the dark sky.

"Who has the first night shift?" Tubs asked, leaning back in his seat and yawning.

"I do" Spencer replied, getting out of the car and taking his spot in the bed of the truck.

"I'll stay up with you" Cleo offered, following behind him. The rest of the group fell asleep, leaving the two on their own as they watched for anything.

"This is insane" Cleo said after a while of silence.

"What is?" Spencer asked, looking up at the sky.

"Everything. We're living in a zombie outbreak right now, and we're thriving. Seems impossible yknow?" Spencer nodded.

"I guess so."

Silence fell over the two until beeping rung out. The two tried to find the source, and eventually found it; an old walkie talkie they had found on one of their scouting trips. The two met each other's eyes before Cleo pressed a button on the device.

"If anyone's out there, it's safe here. We have food and supplies. We're rebuilding society. The coordinates are-"

Static.

"What- wake the others!" Spencer said, rushing back into the truck and shaking the other's awake.

"What..?" Wil mumbled, lazily sitting up.

"This better be good" Tubs yawned, looking at the panicked man.

"The walkie" Spencer said, his words jumbled together. "There's a safe haven or something-"

"Slow down" Lia said calmly, looking over at Cleo, who was now standing behind Spencer.

"The walkie talkie went off, apparently there's a-" Cleo was cut off by the device going off again.

"Again, if there's anyone out there we're safe here. The coordinates are-"

And once again, static.
