The gods kicked everyone out of the throne room after that. Soon I was left sitting by the hearth alone while the Olympians (minus Hermes) and the Titanesses all surrounding me. Theia was off in a corner still tied up. She would be delivered to Tartarus afterwards.
I felt like I was being interrogated and would be going to jail soon. And the thing is, the gods weren't even talking to me. They were talking amongst themselves.
Themis stayed next to me while everyone else had a discussion. I couldn't hear what the gods were saying, but every once in a while they'd glance back at me.
"So I guess my fears were true," I said to Themis, staring at my feet. "I'm the child of a primordial."
Themis nodded. "It's...it's hard to believe. But that was Erebus's symbol. That had to be his voice speaking through Phoebe."
I didn't like it, but everything started to make sense. Why the dead Confederates didn't like me on the CSS Birmingham and said I had an aura of darkness around me; why animals didn't seem to like me because they could smell that darkness; why Pan had excluded me from inheriting his spirit, since I was a child of a being of pure darkness, one that has no place in the Wild; as well as Phoebe's story in general. Themis explained as much.
"Erebus had asked Phoebe for a list of women who would not grow up to become famous or influential in any way. That meant he could impregnate them and if they died, it wouldn't matter. I am sure all of them died, except the one who gave birth to you. Though...I am sure she is dead now, since Erebus imprisoned Phoebe so she would not tell anyone about his visit."
I nodded. "So my mom's dead..." I felt like crying, but I just couldn't. I was so exhausted I couldn't even cry. So much had happened today, fighting Titans, nearly dying multiple times, and then learning that my dad is a primordial god.
"I'm sorry, (Y/N)," Themis said. "But it's all coming together. Erebus was that mysterious figure who visited Phoebe then. He disguised his voice and hid his appearance. Though, in retrospect, appearing as an avatar of darkness is a pretty dead giveaway. It's almost like he was toying with us."
"He probably was," I mumbled. "And all my life, he was waiting for me to prove that I was worthy to be his son. And it took fighting Titans to do that." I shook my head in disbelief.
Themis put a hand on my shoulder. "You must remember, (Y/N). Erebus is a protogenos—a primordial god. His standards are wholly different from even the Olympians and Titans. He has near unlimited power."
"And I'm his son," I said. "I just...I don't understand why he would have a child."
Themis shook her head. "It's... Well, to be candid, it's worrying. To learn that a primordial god has taken such an interest in the mortal world that he would have a child with one is horrifying. He must be planning something huge. He wouldn't do this for no reason."
The doors to the throne room opened, and the Three Fates walked in. They had stone cold looks on their faces. They quickly hurried over to the gods and began to talk.
"Oh, great. Even the Fates are here," I murmured. "Am I going to be sentenced to death?"
Themis was taken aback by the monotonous way I said that. "No, of course not. Did you not hear the warning Erebus gave? You are not to be harmed by the gods or else the wrath of Erebus will fall upon them."
