I remember the glimpse of December, when I was twenty-one, and I thought I could conquer the world on my own. I was untouchable, nothing could sway me from buying a car, looking for a job, or making a mark on my small, undisturbed world.

I memorized the reservation—every in and out, every beautiful wave, and the crushed sand between my fingers. I knew the people in town, I smiled, waved, and listened to their stories. I made acquaintances, sat at parties, weddings, and birthdays, and thought I knew everything there was in such a small, almost invincible town where nothing exciting happened. We had a big parade once, but it was several years ago, and nobody cared much.

But standing here, in the middle of the grocery store, I wonder how wrong I might've been. All these people come in and out, all in their own lives, browsing the dairy section, picking up boxes of cereal, and making small talk at the counter. How many have I crossed paths with and given me mercy to live one more day?

Why did Caius let me live?

"Hey, Lu!" A voice called from behind, blinking and noticing I was now standing beside the freezer. I turned and saw Leah and Seth closely behind him with one foot propped against the cart, sliding close. "Mom's been looking for you all morning!" He said.

"Sue needs something?" I asked. We had a smaller grocer on the rez, but it didn't have everything, and Sue was a consistently creative cook. I know her well enough that if she can't find me, she sends out Leah and Seth on a quest for a hard-to-find ingredient.

"Like clockwork." Leah muttered, visibly irked like any other good day. "Do you have this?" She handed me a piece of paper.

"Yeah, follow me." I guided them through the store, occasionally in and out of sane consciousness. I can't help but be so wary of my surroundings as if every stranger scares and bothers me. I breathed out, calming myself just until the day ends and I could hide in my room, forget it all ever happened, or at least try to.

"You seem bothered." Leah pointed out while I was grabbing some produce.

"What makes you say that?"

She bobbed her head close, as if she could see right through me. And I hate it. I hate how she does it to me every single time. "You and Jackson are fighting again, aren't you? I told you he's annoying."

A laugh broke out of me. "We're not fighting. It's just been a weird few days. I'll get past it."

"Well, if you weren't fighting, then why is he moping back home?"
