Chaptire Treize: The Boy Who Cried Wolf

2021

The last time Sabrina saw Travis just so happened to be the last time she slept. She tried everything from white noise to melatonin but nothing was working. Her mind wasn't at peace and so it went to war with her body. Memories gave her body aches and past fears prompted migraines. She tried to keep a good face at work, but her eyes had lost touch with reality, causing her heart to race at the sight of things with reflections.

Something was wrong, impending doom was lurking about, waiting to catch her off guard.

Before her class came in for the day, Sabrina attempted to rest on the break room's couch. She laid back with her arm draped over her face and her head tilted towards the ceiling. She knew it was futile, but she was on the precipice of falling a part and the last thing she needed was for her students to tell their parents that their teacher whacked out mid lesson.

As she rubbed any hint of fatigue from her face, a colleague came in, offering her a small smile. "Why hello there."

Sabrina rolled her head in his direction, trying to mimic his smile despite of her pounding headache, "Hey Kenny, what's got you all excited?"

Kent took the lid off his container as he approached the microwave, shaking the contents around before opening the door, "I can finally get a new stereo for my room."

"Really? Nice paycheck?"

"More like a nice donation." He replied, punching in the minutes before turning to face her. The young man began to explain, "It was from a law firm in the city. Lisa nearly did a back flip when she saw the check."

"A law firm? We won a settlement or something?" Sabrina asked, sitting up a bit to look more presentable.

Kent laughed, turning slightly to add a few more seconds for his food, "That's what I said but according to Lisa, they've been wanting to donate for a while now. Must've had a kid that came here or something.

"Maybe." The woman agreed, dropping her gaze down to her hand. She wished she was as excited but the news stung dully. As a girl, she would watch crime documentaries and movies about various cases that led to her growing a fascination for law. She would've went with anything between a cop, investigator or lawyer but after the crash, she decided to give up on that dream. After all, no one would listen to her.

Sabrina loves her job though, it sparked a passion that she never knew she had. But it wasn't her dream, she had stolen from someone else.

She pressed her lips together before lowering her legs down and sitting up in the seat, "What's the name of the firm?"

Kent held a finger up, sticking a temporary pin in the conversation until he swallowed a bite of his lasagna. Once it passed his throat, he clicked his tongue, "I think it's Elijah & Veronica Law Firm?"

     "Ah ok—"

"No no no, it's Elijah and Victoria Law Firm—woah!" Kent jumped at the sight of Sabrina bolting upwards. He blinked a few times, bewildered by how she suddenly wide awake. "Uh, is everything ok?"
