I startled awake, rubbing my forehead as my mind struggled to piece together what had happened. It took me a moment to register that I was in the back of Stiles' Jeep, laying against a jacket he'd turned into a makeshift pillow. A rush of embarrassment flooded over me as I realized I had likely drooled a bit in my sleep.I quickly wiped my mouth with the back of my hand, peering out of the window to find almost pitch darkness outside. "Oh god, where am I?" I mumbled to myself, my voice thick with sleep.
There was a loud scream that jolted me fully awake, my heart racing as I shot up in the backseat. What the hell was that? Before I could process it any further, I flung open the door to the Jeep and stumbled out into the night, my senses on high alert.
Stiles and Scott stood a few feet away, both looking equally as startled. "What the fuck?" I said. Stiles yelled, seems like i scared him.
"Dude, you could've given us a warning!" he yelled, shaking his head. I glanced around, trying to piece together what was happening. "A warning? I don't even know where y'all brought me to!" I shot back, my voice a mix of confusion and irritation. "And what are you guys digging?!" I exclaimed, my confusion quickly escalating to shock.
"Uh..." they both stammered, exchanging glances that sent fresh alarm bells ringing in my head.
I stepped closer, my heart pounding as I dared to look over their shoulders. What I saw made my stomach drop. Laid out before them was a wolf's head—its fur matted and its eyes lifeless, glistening eerily under the dim light of the moon.
I slowly backed up, my instincts kicking in. As someone who could transform into a wolf, this was kinda insane to witness. Panic bubbled within me, but I knew I had to keep my composure. They didn't know I was one of them, a creature of the night, and I wasn't about to expose myself just yet.
But not the point anyways. "How did you even find that... What were you even digging for?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly. My mind raced with possibilities. What kind of trouble had Stiles and Scott gotten themselves into this time?
"Nothing..." Scott replied, glancing between me and the gruesome discovery. Stiles remained silent, his expression a mix of intrigue and unease, as if he were trying to weigh the consequences of sharing whatever they had stumbled upon.
"Nothing?" I repeated incredulously, crossing my arms defensively. "That's not 'nothing,' Scott! That's—" I cut myself off, my voice dropping to a whisper, "That's a wolf head. What were you guys doing out here?"
"We were just... digging around," Stiles finally blurted out, his voice lacking its usual bravado and playfulness. He shifted his weight, avoiding eye contact. "You know, checking out some weird legends about this area."
"Legends?" I echoed, trying to keep my voice steady. "So you thought you'd dig up a graveyard and make it a burial site for future wolves?"
"Okay, well whatever this is, you guys need to cover it up..." I said, my voice low but urgent. The last thing we needed was to attract any unwanted attention, especially if there was something—or someone—lurking nearby. I then looked over at the house.
I then looked over at the house next to us. It was all torn up and looked like it had been burned—charred wood, broken windows, and remnants of what had once been a home. My heart dropped as I blinked in disbelief. "Is that the Hale's house?" I asked, shock coursing through my veins.
They both just nodded, then started to cover up the head. Stiles completely froze as he looked up at a cluster of purple flowers creeping through the cracks in the ground near the charred foundation. "What's wrong?" Scott questioned, a hint of concern in his voice.
