Avery Monroe stood at the window of her family's lake house, watching the sun dip low over the water, casting a warm golden glow across the rippling surface. The familiar scent of pine and the distant sound of birds made her smile. She had spent every summer here since she was a child, but this year was special. It was the first summer since she and her friends had gone off to college, and they were all coming back together, for the first time.
The sound of gravel crunching under tires pulled her attention to the driveway. A dusty blue sedan pulled up, and out tumbles Liam, as energetic as ever. He was already grinning as he spotted Avery in the window.
"Avery! Get out here, you hermit!" Liam called, waving her down.
Avery laughed and stepped out onto the porch, just in time to see Chloe's car pull in behind Liam's. Chloe waved, a bright smile on her face, but Avery didn't miss the way her friend seemed a little more reserved than usual. College had been a big adjustment for them all, and it showed in subtle ways.
"You made it!" Avery said as she bounded down the steps to meet them. She pulled Chloe into a tight hug, then turned to Liam, who immediately picked her up and spun her around.
"Put me down, you maniac!" she squealed, laughing.
"You're just too tiny, Avery. Can't help it!" Liam joked, setting her back on her feet.
They were soon joined by Ethan, who arrived with his usual laid-back attitude, and Sophie, who was a new addition to their group, introduced through Chloe. Sophie was quieter, her gaze thoughtful as she took in the surroundings. Avery noticed the way Sophie's eyes lingered on the lake, but didn't comment on it.
As the sun continued to set, they all gathered on the porch, settling into the comfortable silence only old friends could share.
"So," Liam said, breaking the quiet, "any crazy college stories to share? I'm pretty sure I have at least three that could get me kicked out if the administration ever found out."
Ethan chuckled. "Not surprised. But seriously, how's everyone been? It's like we haven't seen each other in forever."
Avery leaned back in her chair, her gaze drifting to the lake. "It's been..... different! College is good, but uh... I miss this. Us!"
Chloe nodded, her smile a big wistful. "Same. It's weird not seeing you guys everyday."
Sophie, who had been quietly listening, finally spoke up. "It's nice to have friends like this. I didn't have anything like this before."
Liam grinned, raising his bottle of soda in a mock toast. "Well then, welcome to the chaos, Sophie! This summer is going to be epic!"
They all laughed, the tension of being apart for so long melting away. As the evening settled into a comfortable rhythm, the friends moved from the porch to the fire pit by the lake. The crackling fire cast flickering shadows across their faces, the warmth cutting through the cool night air. The mood was relaxed, with everyone savoring the nostalgia of being back together.
"Remember that time we tried to camp out here and Liam freaked out because he thought he heard a bear?" Ethan teased, poking the fire with a stick.
Liam rolled his eyes but grinned. "It wasn't a bear. It was some kind of animal! I was just being cautious."
"Sure, that's what it was," Avery laughed, tossing a marshmallow into the fire, watching it puff up and catch flame.
"Alright, alright, make fun of me all you want," Liam said, leaning back in his chair. "But I'm still the one who found the way back to the house in the dark."
Chloe chuckled softly, her eyes reflecting the flames. "Those were the best nights. No responsibilities, no worries... just us."
A silence fell over the group, a comfortable one, as they all seemed to take a moment to remember the simpler times. Avery felt a pang of longing for those days, but also a sense of peace being back here, surrounded by the people who mattered most.
"So, what's everyone's plan for the summer?" Sophie asked, breaking the quiet. Her voice was soft, almost hesitant, but there was a genuine curiosity in her tone.
Avery looked at the others, wondering the same thing. They hadn't talked much about their plans, too caught up in the excitement of being together again.
"I'm interning at my dad's company," Ethan said with a shrug. "It's not exactly thrilling, but it'll look good on my resume."
"Chloe and I are working at the community center," Avery added, glancing at her friend. "Just like old times."
Chloe nodded, smiling. "Yeah, we thought it'd be fun to do something together. Plus, it'll keep us busy."
Liam stretched his arms over his head. "I'm taking it easy this summer. Might hit the road for a bit, see where it takes me. No real plans."
Sophie looked thoughtful. "I'm not sure yet. I guess I'm still figuring it out."
Avery noticed the way Sophie's expression seemed to cloud over, but before she could ask, Chloe jumped in.
"Hey, why don't we make a list of things we want to do this summer?" Chloe suggested, her eyes lighting up. "Like, an adventure list."
Liam's eyes lit up at the idea. "Now you're talking! We could do something epic, like a road trip or-"
"Or we could keep it simple," Avery interjected, laughing. "Not everything has to be a grand adventure, Liam."
"Where's the fun in that?" Liam shot back, grinning.
They spent the next hour throwing out ideas, some wild, some more down-to-earth. As the fire burned down to embers, they finally settled on a mix of activities-everything from hiking and stargazing to trying new restaurants and having lazy days by the lake.
"Sounds perfect," Avery said, feeling content. "It's going to be a great summer."
As the night grew late and the fire died down, they reluctantly decided to call it a night. Sophie was the first to head inside, followed by Ethan and Chloe, who walked back to the house, still chatting softly.
Avery and Liam lingered by the fire, enjoying the quiet.
"You know," Liam said after a while, his tone more serious than usual, "it's really good to be back here. With everyone. I didn't realize how much I missed it."
"Me too," Avery admitted, looking at him. "We've all changed a lot, but... it's nice to know some things stay the same."
Liam nodded, then stood up, brushing off his hands. "Come on, let's head in before the mosquitoes carry us away."
Avery laughed, standing up and following him back to the house. As they reached the porch, she paused, glancing back at the lake. The water was calm, the night still, and for a moment, everything felt right in the world.
After all, it was just the beginning.
