True hero

What does it mean to be a hero?
Does it mean fighting for what you think is right?
Does it mean standing firm even at death's door?
Does it mean continuously fighting even if everything seems lost?
Does it mean the willingness to give up everything for the sake of others?
Does it mean sacrificing yourself for the greater good?
Can you be considered a hero even if your actions are pointless in the end?
Can you be considered a hero when you fail to prevent the very thing you are trying to stop?
Can you be considered a hero when the very people you swore to protect die because of your failings?

"What are saying Undyne?! Are you crazy?!"
"Maybe I am, Alphys. Maybe I am."
Undyne slips on her breastplate.
A robotic voice spoke up, updating their situation.
"The human is quickly approaching the Hotlands."
Alphys' face twisted into a slight grimace.
"You can't go out there! It's too dangerous!" She protested loudly.
"And staying here's any safer? Face it Al, we're sitting ducks in here. The human is going to eventually get the lab and that safety of yours will be as good as gone."
"W-we can evacuate the lab! There is no way I'm letting you face that abomination!"
Undyne looks away regretfully.
"Look. We can't keep running. There are maybe a dozen children here and the environment beyond the lab is no less dangerous than the human is. Lava everywhere, air propulsion devices, and movement detectors. One misstep and everything we've done would have been for nothing.
"I can disable the defense mechanism! We can have all the adults keep an eye on the children! There has to be a better option than what you're suggesting!"
Undyne pulls on her boots.
"Again, we can't keep running. Even if we manage to get everyone past The Hotlands, the human will just follow us, and guess what? We disabled the defense mechanism so they'll have no trouble getting through. What then? Everyone will be stuck, locked in by the Barrier, where the human can do whatever they want."
"And you think you can stop her? Undyne, you've seen what she can do, you've seen what she has done, what makes you want to challenge that?"
"God damn it, Alphys! Don't you think I know? What else can we do?! Just wait to be slaughtered? The only thing we can try to do is to intercept her on her trajectory and make sure she doesn't go any further!" Undyne shouts in frustration.
"......" Alphys couldn't bring herself to speak.
Undyne slips on her gloves.
"I'm sorry, Alphys. I made a vow to protect these people when I first joined the Royal Guard. I can't bring myself to run when it comes to the safety of my people."
"What about you?! What happens if you die trying to save everyone else?"
Undyne faces Alphys with a saddened look on her face.
"Let's hope it doesn't come down to that," Undyne replied, looking away again.
"Undyne! You know I hate hoping for things to happen! Hope is taking the slightest and most improbable chances and saying that they will occur despite the odds being impossibly against them!" Alphys screamed with tears in her eyes.
"Hey... lizard brain," Undyne consoled, somehow mustering a smile in such a dire situation, "you should know best to never tell me the odds. Besides, as long as it's not zero, we have a chance, right?"
"... that's how percents work." Alphys sniffles out.
"Haha! There's my little nerd! Don't worry, I'll crush this little maniac!" Undyne cried with a layer of false bravado and smiled her iconic toothy grin.
"W-what do you want me to do if that doesn't happen?" Alphys asked, still very much weary of the more likely outcome.
Undyne fell silent, the prior bravado gone in an instant.
"Leave... if it ever comes down to that, leave. Don't come back looking for me."
"......"

The wind is howling atop Mount Impasse. Undyne's hair swirled around wildly as she waited for the human spear in hand.
The dim false stars illuminated the caverns.
"And there she is, that crazy son of a gun." Undyne sneered, griping her spear even tighter.
She jumped, quickly cutting through the air, wind whistling around her as she fell, and smashed into the path before the human, cracking the rocky terrain below her.
For some reason, the human wasn't fazed at all, not even a flinch out of her.
In fact, she even had a frustrated look on her face.
'Why would she be annoyed? It's not like she had any trouble dispatching the monster before.'
"So, how many have you killed?" Undyne asked.
The human doesn't answer.
"What do you plan on achieving by killing monsters all of these monsters? What have they done to deserve an unjust execution? Is it fun for you? Is there something in your sick rotting brain that enjoys the suffering of others? Is that what drives you forward? Because I don't see any reason why a normal person would go out of their way to do all of this, I really don't."
The human seems tired of your rant.... almost like she has heard it before.
"Are you just going to stand there? After all you did?!" Undyne's anger is on the edge of boiling over.
"..."
The human is waiting.
"Fine! You want a fight, right? Let's go, you little maniac!"
Undyne raises her spear as a challenge to the human, beckoning her forward.
