ONE,
man in the barn.—
YOU BLINKED, then blinked again. if you were given a nickel for every naked man you watched sprint into your parent's barn from far beyond the horizon, you would have one nickel. sure, one nickel wasn't a lot, but it's still strange that it happened once.
when you first spotted the man and all his glory, you were searching in the dense woodlands near your parents' farm when he suddenly appeared, running like a bunny with its tail on fire.
like any sane person, you weren't sure what to make of this. is this your wild imagination playing tricks, or was there really a nude man flying across the field just a few seconds ago? the scene was so surreal, and the image of this strange man dashing through tall blades of grass, now forcefully engraved into your memory, stuffed your mind full of questions.
knowing there was only one surefire way to figure out whether or not this man was real, you grabbed your father's shotgun from his bedroom and tiptoed out to the barn.
terrified of what you may find lurking around, you steadily aimed the gun barrel, ready to fire. with your heartbeat now thumping against your rib cage, you moved stealthily across the ancient, groaning floorboards, careful not to make any loud sounds. your trigger finger trembled as you crept forward, hoping to remain undetected as you searched every nook and cranny. pushing in each stall with unsteady hands, knowing full well that one may have what you've been looking for.
you held your breath as you neared the final stable. it's funny how these things play out; perhaps your twisted brain led you on after all. come on, a nude man running through a felid in broad daylight? how absurdly stupid does that sound?
a firm knot swelled in your throat as your fingers hesitatingly began to push inward. without much thought, you then busted down the door, giving the person no time to act as you aimed. your racing heart dropped to the floor as the barn flooded with a soothing wave. no one was there. not a naked man in sight.
you allowed a deep, heavy sigh to tumble from your lips. only then did you feel the weight of the breath as it exited your body, a breath you hadn't even realized you had been holding onto. as the realization soon dawned that the man was nothing more than a mere illusion, a wave of relief swept over you, allowing your mind to finally rest easy, if only for the next seven seconds. however, in the very next moment, your body tensed up, rendering you as motionless as an ice sculpture.
as quickly as it vanished, the gut-wrenching feeling returned in full swing. the lone noise of a bucket pale being knocked over sent an uneasy shiver jetting down your spinal cord.
god knows you wanted to believe it was nothing more than a rodent that found shelter from the cold by cozying up in a pile of loose hay. but deep down, you knew better than to hold onto false hope.
