I remember holding my breath for so long that as soon as I inhaled, my chest ached grievously.

It didn't make sense, not even by a mile. I kept thinking that it might be a lie, but he had no reason to do it if he could tear me to shreds from where I sat—it wouldn't matter the slightest if I believed him or not.

"Tell me what's on your mind." I moved to stand and look at him, to observe the way he spoke and how he moved. He bobbed his head in curiosity, but I held my stance and spoke in a cold, jagged breath.

"I'm sorry if I don't believe your mate bullshit." He looked taken aback, but I was surprised to see him laugh.

"Not many are granted the opportunity to meet one. Humans are capable of grasping the concept of it through what little they know, but if you lived a thousand lifetimes, I should think it's a concept spared freely to us in a cruel sense of way."

"But I'm not like you."

"It comes in all shapes and sizes, I'm afraid." Caius drew his hands over his chest, unclasping the pin at the center, and suddenly his coat was around me, safely and quickly secured against my body. "You look like you're about to pass out."

"Alcohol doesn't mix well in this weather." I remarked. "What does this mean?" I looked down and traced my fingers on the faded crest in the shape of a V and the glowing ruby at the very top. It was similar to the necklace he wore.

"It's the sacred crest of the Volturi."

"Volturi?" I stared at him.

"Our coven. We govern and enforce the laws of our kind." I nodded, understanding why he spoke and moved the way he did. And why Laurent never fought back or even stood a chance. But there was more fear than respect, and I was too wary to ask why. "You'll meet my brothers soon enough."

It sounded like a threat. "Are they here, too?"

"They have no business here. My home is in Volterra, where I would hope you see all its grandeur."

"Italy?!" He couldn't have run here, couldn't he?

"Is it difficult to believe?" He started to walk, circling me like a hawk. I embraced the coat tighter as chills ran up my back. "You seem to be taking everything well, considering the threatening paleness of your face."

"I'm coping." I admitted through gritted teeth. "I distract myself so I don't inevitably explode and lose what's left of my poor mind." I heard him hum. "But I'm not going anywhere with you, if you must know."
