Charlie didn't let Evan into the nurse's office. Muffled voices, Charlie's and the school nurse, Clarissa Ashbrook's, could be heard behind the door, but nothing could be made out. Judging by the intonation, the nurse was lamenting what had happened. No wonder. This wasn't the first time Charlie had ended up in her office. Evan decided to wait outside to make sure everything was alright.

"Evan, why are you here?"

Evan turned around. Valerie Brown, the captain of the school cheerleading team, was already standing next to him, looking with slight concern.

"Why aren't you in class?" he asked in return.

"Miss Duff fainted and was taken to the hospital. No biology today."

"Lucky. Too bad it happened that way, but now I won't have to feel guilty about skipping class."

"How are you? Arthur pushed you pretty hard. Are you okay?" Valerie moved closer and placed her hand on his shoulder. Evan hissed briefly in pain and tried to remove the girl's hand as unobtrusively as possible. After yesterday, it hurt a lot, and Birnem had added to it. It took a lot of effort today not to show everyone how much it really hurt.

"I'm fine, it's just... I'm just waiting to make sure Charlie's okay."

"I don't approve," the girl said timidly, "of what Arthur did. But good job standing up for the new guy. The girls and I think you won that fight."

"I didn't do anything. It's just that Birnem could use a little reminder and a bit of a comedown. Dad can't cover for everything."

"That's true... Listen. While we were texting, you missed one of my messages. You never replied. It was an important question for me."

Evan hoped to avoid this conversation in life. Valerie had been bombarding his phone with messages about Casey's party since morning. After all, she had invited the "W" girls, and now Brown was trying to impose herself as his escort there. Holden had never shown Valerie any special signs of attention, but for some reason, she decided that this wasn't the case. Despite being in the same class, there was too much distance between them. Valerie, Wendy, Casey, Birnem, and his friends, they were all from rich or relatively wealthy families, unlike Holden. He had been friends with Casey since childhood, and if he hadn't been hanging out with her, he probably wouldn't have been invited to the party today.

Charm and almost animal magnetism were the only things that opened doors for Evan and helped him survive in Amber Hill. But these positive qualities had one downside. Unconditional politeness and kindness were often perceived by others as flirting.

"I probably didn't notice... Coleman kept glancing at me, and..." Evan shrugged absently.

"Casey's having a party today. Want to go together?" the girl asked directly. But Evan was saved from answering this time by the opening door of the office. Charlie came out into the corridor and crookedly grinned at Valerie.

"What's up, Brown? Did Birnem hit you on the head too?"

"You got it worse anyway. Is your brain still intact?" Valerie clicked her tongue in annoyance, "I'm actually talking to Evan."

"And I had the audacity to think you were worried about me," Charlie chuckled, looking at the girl challengingly, "It wasn't worth it."

Valerie rolled her eyes in disgust, and Evan thought for the first time that there might be a specific reason for the bullying of Charlie. Birnem, like other school bullies, usually picked on the weak for fun. It started small and grew, but it couldn't be said that there was any ultimate goal. They were just bored. And they started treating Charlie badly right away and very harshly. Had they already been acquainted before the school year started?
