Chapter 1 ~ The Random Caller

I woke up to a call, which is strange because I never get random calls that aren't from friends. I picked up and said "Hello who is this?" and got no response just a lot of crackling. When I heard someone saying "Hello I need help" I was surprised, it started to fade out and crackle again. I said "I am sorry I can't hear you." so I ended up hanging up the phone.

I went downstairs to find the family photo on the floor cracked and shattered to pieces. I took the photo from the destroyed frame and hid it in my room. I hear a crash sound from the kitchen. It is probably Mum making breakfast again. I walk into the kitchen to find Mum with a bunch of boxes looking like she is getting ready to pack up the house to move. As a joke I asked "Are we moving to the Australian outback" "That's not a bad idea actually" Mum said without hesitation, so then I knew it wasn't a joke to her. "Here are some moving boxes I am booking a flight to Perth and we're leaving tomorrow!" I was surprised and said "Haha hilarious mum, you do know it's not April Fool's Day right?" she said, "Esme I know it's not, don't be silly we are moving tomorrow to Australia so pack your things." "I have lived here for 16 years which is my whole life but you and Dad lived here for longer than....." as soon as I said that I instantly regretted all of it. Mum looked like she was about to cry. "Mum I am sorry I shouldn't have said that." After what I told Mum she went to her room.

I finished packing up the kitchen and put the boxes that I packed near the front door. I took the boxes Mum gave me to pack my stuff upstairs, I shut the door, and packed all my clothes. I got out my suitcase from above my closet to put all my stuff in for the next 3 days while moving. when I finished packing my room up I decided to pack the rest of the house to help Mum but she beat me to it. For someone sad, she packed the fucking house up quickly.

I heard a knock at the door, I opened it to find my BFF Anna standing there looking like she was about to ball her eyes out. Mum and Anna's mum have been really good friends since they were 13 so that's probably how Anna found out that we are moving. I told Anna I was sorry and pulled her up the stairs and into my room. As soon as we got into my room Anna asked "Is your mum ok I heard her on the phone with my mum and she seemed extremely sad and my mum said something about moving to Australia so I ran over here?" Anna sounded concerned about Mum "Well she has been inside her room since this morning, I think I upset her earlier." I replied, "Well what did you do to upset her?" Anna asked, I said "I mentioned something about Dad," "Bad move," said Anna "Yeah."

Me and Anna were talking when we heard whimpering coming from downstairs. We found Mum crying near the pictures of me and Dad together 2 days before he went missing. Dad went missing on his birthday, he was having a party with some work friends on our small family yacht when a giant storm came through my home town Wrexham and Mum has been sad in this house ever since. Just then Anna's Mum walks in and takes Mum to their house. There was a moving van pulling up into our driveway so I got all the boxes with the help of Anna. Me and Anna said our goodbyes and her Mum came over to drop her off Mum so we could head to the Clayton Hotel near Manchester Airport. After getting to the hotel I went and got Mum and me some food to eat for dinner. I got the hotel room phone and called reception. " Hi is it possible to get 2 hamburger meals delivered to room 474 at 6 pm please?" I asked "Of course enjoy your stay!" the reception lady said politely. There's food on the way now we just need to get comfy and watch TV until the food comes. It's not bad of a life sitting in a comfy bed and waiting for people to bring your food to you is it? The food came and Mum sat in silence while shoving the burgers down her throat. After we both finished our food Mum went straight to sleep, she had a stressful day trying to move and I just went on my phone and messaged Anna to tell her how it was going.

In the morning when I woke up I went to get me and Mum some breakfast, but when I got there there was Anna with a bunch of food for us. I thanked Anna and headed back up to the room, but Mum only just woke up when I walked into the room. We packed up all our bags after we ate and checked out of the hotel. Me and Mum decided to take the airport shuttle bus to the airport. After arriving we went in handed our luggage over and headed over to the lounge. In the lounge, there was free food and drinks, comfy chairs, and showers. I sat on one of the comfy chairs with a glass of water and was reading one of my favourite books when my phone started vibrating. The number looked like the one that called me yesterday. Not knowing who it was I decided to answer their call. "Hello this is Esme, who is this?" I said, "Oh sweety I've missed you, please help I am stuck on an island and I only get a signal once a day for 2 minutes that's what happened yesterday, I am near......" said Dad as the signal went bad so I had to hang up again. I won't tell Mum about the calls because she'll be sad. Mum came over when she heard that our gate was released, so we got our backpacks and went to our gate. At our gate, there was a bunch of men in suits and ties looking at me like I was a cockroach, so I looked at my phone and sat on a seat. Anna messaged me wishing Mum and me a good flight so I replied and said 'Thanks! We are about to board I have to put my phone on airplane mode and I will call you when I land'.

"Good morning Emirates passengers, flight 677 to Perth Western Australia is now boarding first and business class passengers. Have a great flight." said the flight attendant. Mum rushed us to the line where the business class people were to get to our seats, our seats were near the middle of the business class (that's a good thing). This flight was one of the most bumpy flights I have ever been on in my life! When we were getting ready to come off the plane we looked outside and it was rainy. When we got off we went to the pick-up area to get to the hotel we booked in our final destination Perth. Once we got into our Uber we headed straight to the Hotel. Mum started to look for houses and found a nice area that she wanted to buy in. "Hay Esme you're going to have to find a part-time job and a school you want to go to, so start researching." said Mum "Why don't I go get us some food at the shops," I said she, thought it was a good idea and gave me some money. The shops were not so far away to walk to and it's a pretty big shop. When I got back to the hotel room Mum was asleep, so I quietly put the food away and started to look for a job nearby for Mum to go to. I found a nice school near where Mum wants to live and a job near there for Mum.
