"Sit in and watch the sunlight fade"

The few minutes that Coulson talked to Thor seemed like an eternity. I sank deeper and deeper into my thoughts, into all the questions. Truth is a construct, showing an entirely different picture depending on the viewer's angle. But I was young and naive and had set my mind on finding the one, ultimate truth in this case.

My frenzied theories were interrupted when I heard the beeping in my ear and then a voice. "Romanoff, he wants to speak to you," I heard Coulson through the communicator, sounding anything but pleased. "I'm on my way," I replied and immediately started moving, forcing myself not to look too pleased when I got there. I should have expected that he would want to talk to me. After all, I was worthy of his hammer and had met his lovely brother.

"Lady Romanoff," he greeted me and I paused for a moment to inspect him, although there wasn't much to see other than bare muscles. "Your Highness..." I tried to be as unsarcastic as I could. Despite the tons of power that must be hidden in this guy, he didn't seem dangerous or a destroyer of worlds to me, and certainly not as deceitful as Loki. But I knew that it could all be deception.

"I've been told that you are worthy of my hammer Mjolnir. May I ask for proof?" Slowly, all this mistrust was starting to get on my nerves. It was understandable that you wouldn't just believe anyone, but at some point, it was too much. Nevertheless, I took the object from his hand without effort, waved it back and forth, and then gave it back. "Good, if that's all clear then..." I offered a somewhat drastic change to the topic. I may have sounded a little more unfriendly than I had planned. Still, Thor nodded in agreement, albeit a little taken aback.

"I'm afraid I require your help in this. I'm sorry you were drawn into this affair, but a lot might depend on it." "I know. Loki told me that you want to bring chaos to the nine worlds..." "Loki is a liar. He is a deceitful snake." "That was my impression too. But can you assure me that you are not one as well?" I replied. "I have found friends here. Friends whose lives I would not risk. And I have learned to appreciate your world... I may have been arrogant and reckless before, but I have changed." He raised his hammer. "Trust Mjolnir. He would not recognize me as worthy if I did not have a good heart..."

I looked at the leather handle and the iron head with the ancient engravings. Was having a good heart really the only requirement? I had many good attributes, but I would have failed any fairy tale test for a 'good heart' or a pure conscience. And who even decided what that means? Help others? Don't be heartless to other living beings? Follow these 10 rather loosely formulated laws?

It was the only clue I had, aside from unreliable mythology. "Very well. How do we deal with Loki?"

To make a long story short, we returned to Asgard with a more or less worked-out plan, mostly ignoring the vehemently protesting Coulson. I felt a little sorry for him, but for once S.H.I.E.L.D. had no business in this matter. Thor said a quick goodbye to his new friends before we left. The only major problem was that we both disagreed about what the god of mischief had intended next. The plan was formulated with accordingly little details.

Step 1: Get Loki to give a villain monologue and reveal what his big goal was.

"Loki!" I burst through the door and found myself in the royal chambers for the first time. I didn't take the time to look around, though. All that interested me now was Loki and the frost giants, surrounded by dead guards. Either the blue aliens had attacked him or he had led them here. Whatever had happened, they had to be stopped. Everything I knew about this species came from the stories of the Warriors Three, and those were mainly limited to the fact that they were dangerous, heartless monsters.

Loki stood in front of one of the attackers, who was lying on the ground and looking at him, visibly shocked. The scepter in his hand was aimed at him. "And your death came at the hand of a son of Odin." With that, he fired a bright beam from the tip of the stick and dissolved the other into sparks. With that problem now solved, my attention turned to the woman, who quickly ran up to Loki and hugged him.

The king reciprocated the gesture, but his gaze was focused on me. "You're back already," he greeted me, whereupon Frigga, as I suspected, turned to me and then looked at her son again. "You really did it..." The disappointment and pain in her voice were unmistakable and felt even to me like a painful stab. So she knew what he was planning. Which meant they were close. "I'm sorry, Mother, there was no other way. You know there isn't," he tried to persuade her, but she just shook her head.

"What are you planning now?" "The ice giants will pay for what they did to us," Loki said firmly. "Loki... don't" "Mother, they started all this. They disrupted Thor's coronation, they tried to kill father. Are you really going to let them get away with it?" "Get away with it? They're dead. By your hand." "And they won't stop until the rest of them are dead."

Frigga met my eyes. She didn't believe me. I swallowed hard and automatically tried to shut down, but this woman had such a powerful and comforting presence that I would have loved to tell her all my deepest, darkest secrets, my whole story.

I quickly looked away, which wasn't really like me. "I'm very sorry about your son, Your Majesty." I tried to sound as sincere as possible. I really felt sorry for Loki, who, right on cue, went flying through the room

Thor summoned his favorite toy back to him and Loki got up to give us both a nasty look.

"It's good to see you again," the king said to his older brother. "You're weaker than I thought," he then turned to me. I could tell from his posture that he was about to use the scepter and reduce us to our atoms, which I wasn't particularly keen on. "Why did you make her kill me? Don't you even have enough honor to face me yourself?" Thor accused him, holding the hammer anticipatory.

Good. Up to this point, we had a plan. Now it depended entirely on Loki how it would turn out. Whether we would have to fight him or he would retreat. From what I could tell, we would have to oppose him with all our might. There was a brief silence before Loki finally answered.
