Harry still couldn't get over Sirius's death.
He was the closest thing Harry had to family and his first real chance at a normal life. Just a few months before he passed away, Sirius had been talking about Harry coming to live with him and Remus up in the hills somewhere. It wouldn't be much with Sirius on the run, but Harry didn't care; the idea of living with his father's two best friends filled him with a comfort and joy he hadn't felt in a long time.
But Sirius was gone.
Leaving Harry and Remus alone in a drafty little apartment. Harry couldn't complain too much, Remus was a great man and he'd done his best to make the place feel like home. Shelves full of books lined practically every wall, old records decorated most free surfaces and there was always a good supply of chocolate hidden away in the cupboards. It was by far the best place he'd ever lived, other than Hogwarts, and he'd grown very close to Remus, but still,no Sirius
"Mornin Harry." Remus said pleasantly, joining Harry at the wooden kitchen table with two cups of tea and a very thick book.
It used to annoy Harry how unaffected Remus seemed about Sirius's death, but over time he came to realize that Remus was just quieter about his grief than Harry was. He smoked twice as much as he used to, not to mention the blunts he smoked almost every evening out on the balcony. He drank more and slept less, and his temper often ran away with him, causing his accent to thicken and his fists to tighten. He never directed the anger at anyone, but Harry could see it was there, simmering below the surface.
Harry could still remember the first time he'd caught Remus crying quietly to himself in an armchair in front of the fire, a bottle of fire whisky dangling from one hand and his head cradled in the other. A box lay open on the coffee table beside him, photos of his mum, dad and Sirius lay strewn across its surface, some moving and some frozen still like muggle photos.
Harry sighed and pushed the memory from his mind, focusing instead on the tea in front of him. He'd found that sweet things improved his mood and Remus always put a generous amount of sugar in the tea he made. They chatted for a while about various Sunday morning things as they ate their cereal. Remus suggested he should invite Ron and Hermione over for a few days in the holidays and Harry agreed excitedly, dropping his things in the sink and running upstairs to write his letters. Below him he could hear the sound of Remus entering his study, he vaguely remembered Remus saying something about finishing next term's lesson-plan over breakfast.
Harry flopped down on his bed with his quill and parchment. He wrote two lines before he heard a crashing sound coming from the kitchen followed by a long string of swear words.
"Remus! Where the bloody hell have you hidden all the chocolate?!"
Harry's blood went cold.
He knew that voice.
Shaking, he grabbed his wand and made his way quietly down the stairs, heart pounding in his ears, making his head swim.
He heard the study door swing open and saw Remus, pale and shaking like Harry, standing in the hall. He brought a finger up to his lips telling Harry to be quiet before walking slowly towards the kitchen.
Harry could hear someone muttering as they rifled through the cupboards, dropping things over the floor.
Remus paused by the kitchen door, taking a deep breath before kicking it open and launching inside, wand raised, eyes flaming. Harry followed close behind him, raising his own wand. His stomach tightened and his mouth went dry.
Remus's wand dropped just a little when he saw the man Infront of them, a small gasp escaped his lips, and his eyes flickered over the figure.
For a moment, Harry thought he was about to break completely but then the fire returned to his eyes, and he pointed his wand straight at the man's chest, growling quietly.
The man had a similar reaction, his grey-blue eyes filled with tears as he reached a hand towards Remus before taking it back and smiling sadly. "Still hiding the chocolate, I see." The man croaked, voice trembling. Harry felt a tear fall down his cheek. He felt like the world was closing in on him.he couldn't breathe.
"Sirius?"
His voice sounded watery and far away. Sirius's eyes flickered to the spot behind Remus where harry was standing and he let out a sob "Harry?" He choked, taking a stumbling step towards him.
Suddenly Remus was jumping towards Sirius, grabbing the collar of his tattered robes and pining him to the fridge. "Who the fuck are you." He snarled, face inches away from Sirius's.
"Mooney, Love, its me."
Harry saw the same broken look flicker back into Remus's eyes before it disappeared again. "Prove it." He spat.
Sirius laughed weakly "Always were a suspicious one weren't you Mooney, darling." Remus shoved him harder into the wall. "Alright!" Sirius cried, staring at the ceiling for a moment as he thought of something to say.
"The first time I kissed you-," Harry heard the breath catch in Remus's throat, "Was on Valentine's Day, you got really mad and almost punched me in the face." Sirius laughed a little at the memory. "Because you thought I was being a prick and only kissing you cause I was lonely."
Remus dropped his wand and took a step away from Sirius brining his hand up to his mouth as tears formed in his eyes "It can't be-"
"And then I told you that id been falling in love with you since I met you." Sirius sniffed, "And then, when you finally came round to believing me, we went and..." Sirius laughed as the tears began streaming faster down his face.
"We went and hexed James's hair pink just before his big date with Lilly." Remus finished.
They stared at each other for a moment before Remus strode towards the other man, wrapping him in his arms and lifting him off the floor, face buried in the curls of his long raven hair.
"I can't believe it's you" he mumbled; words muffled by Sirius's robes. Sirius smiled and lifted Remus's face, kissing him with all the pain and want of over nine months of being apart.
After a few moments they pulled away from each other enough for Sirius to beckon Harry over. Harry unstuck his feet from where they'd been rooted to the worn kitchen tiles and shuffled towards them. It didn't fully register until he was in Sirius's arms surrounded by his familiar scent of motor oil, whiskey and cedar wood, that Sirius was back. And not just in his imagination, but real and warm and solid in his arms.
He was really back.
Sirius pulled Remus over and they all stood together in the middle of the kitchen, crying and laughing and hugging each other until Remus pulled away eyes red and puffy, "Anyone fancy a Cupa?" he asked ruffling Harry's hair.
"Yes please! Oh, and bring us some chocolate will you, Love?" Sirius asked, winking mischievously. Remus rolled his eyes and tried to stop the bright smile from spreading across his face as he turned towards the kettle, Sirius grabbed his hand, pulling him in for another kiss.
