I attempted to revisit her mother, despite the waves of shame crashing over me from memories past. Nevertheless, it felt like a necessary step, a burden I had to bear.
"Hey, Mo-"
"You didn't tell me you're engaged to such a lovely man," she exclaimed, her laughter filling the room. Glancing over, I noticed a neatly wrapped gift basket with an opened wine bottle.
"What? No, Mom, I'm not engaged," I replied, my confusion evident.
"Well, clearly it's something, I mean, look at the champagne."
I endured her chatter, but inside, my heart was in turmoil. I couldn't bring myself to accept it. With a heavy sigh, I retreated to the rented car and drove to a nearby park, eventually succumbing to sleep.
This is too much.
Far too much.
When I eventually woke, my phone displayed numerous missed calls. Panic and guilt gripped me as I sat up, then simply drove back home.
"You had me so scared," a voice came from behind me as I entered.
I didn't turn around.
"You went to my mom?"
"I thought leaving her a gift would be a kind gesture."
"It's not."
"Please, tell me. What do you want from me?"
"You're just... too much."
"I know."
After that, I grappled with my thoughts, drowning in a sea of emotions.
Caught between him and my mom, my mind was a whirlwind. The next day, I woke up with a resolve to confront the situation head-on.
"So, that's what happened," I explained, watching as their faces registered shock through the screen of my phone.
"Sucks to say... but I think you should just ride the wave out," one of them suggested.
"Girl, what?"
"I'm sorry, but this guy seems desperate. Maybe just go out with him and make it the worst date he's ever been on."
"Yeah, that sounds great. I mean, really give it to him. Tell him everything in the email and then some."
"Isn't the email what got me in this position in the first place?"
"Yes, but it did fix the situation we were just in."
That did sound good. After a few minutes of contemplation, I decided to call him. He answered after just one ring.
"Yes?"
"Let's go on a date."
"Really?" he said, sounding flabbergasted.
"Sure, why not?" I hung up, knowing he would figure out everything soon enough.
