You were aware of the hardships of getting romantically involved with a shinobi; your mother even warned you about the heartache that lay ahead of you. You ignored her warnings, falling head over heels in love with the one and only Iruka Umino.
Due to his chunin status along with being one of the teachers at the academy his missions were far and few between.
Slipping your arms around the waist of your sleeping boyfriend, you pulled yourself flush against his back. Early tomorrow morning he was being sent out for an unknown amount of time for fairly routine escort mission.
A soft sigh escaped your lips as you leaned for head between his shoulder blades. You fondly remembered the first time you laid eyes him.
Silently you slipped into one of the large classrooms at the academy, your aunt had asked you to pick up your younger cousin since she had some errands to run. You knew you were a bit early but you had decided to sneak a glance at what the ninjas in training were learning.
Your eyes fell on the figure at the front of the class, he was holding an open text book while gesturing to notes that were written on the blackboard behind him. A faint pink dusted your cheeks. He was gorgeous!
"Hey, sis...," you looked down to find a boy with shocking blonde hair pull gently at your pants to gain your attention.
You blinked and crouched down to his level.
"Are you and Iruka-sensei bumping uglies?"
You felt your eyes widen as the blush on your cheeks hit you full force. "W-What?!" You clasped your hand over your mouth at your outburst, which drew the attention of the entire class including the adorable teacher.
"I..."
The boy, who you later learned was the infamous Naruto Uzumaki grinned, "Iruka-sensei!" He waved, "Sis," he pointed to your crouched form, "likes you!"
Iruka flushed, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. "Class dismissed!"
You grabbed your cousin's hand, making your way down to the bottom of the class. "Sorry about that..." You gave him a weak grin, "I didn't mean to interrupt..."
Iruka made eye contact with you for a fleeting moment before averting his eyes elsewhere, "It's no problem... They were itching to get out early anyway..."
"Name," your cousin whined impatiently, "I wanna go home."
You gave her a small smile before turning your attention back to the man before you. "It was a pleasure meeting you Iruka-sensei."
A small smile tugged at your lips as you recalled your first meeting. For the following weeks after that you had returned to the academy to retrieve your cousin, each time making small talk with Iruka much to your cousins displeasure at waiting. Placing a gentle kiss to his shoulder, you remembered the first date you shared with the man.
You laughed walking alongside Iruka, your hands clasped behind your back. You were wearing your favorite color sundress with a pair of matching white sandals. "Seems like you have a handful with Naruto."
"Handful is an understatement," he man mumbled, sitting down on one of the stools at Ichiraku.
Grinning, you sat down next to him. "You know...," you bumped shoulders with him lightly, your cheeks turning slightly pink, "I'm really glad you asked me to come out today."
Iruka felt his ears redden as he rubbed the back of his neck, "Me too."
Giving your orders to old man Teuchi, the two of you continued to make small talk while you waited for your meals.
"Sis!," Naruto squeezed between you and Iruka, grinning. "How about you ditch Iruka-sensei," he jabbed his thumb in the direction of his shocked teacher, "and go on a date with yours truly?"
You covered your mouth with your hand, laughing. "Maybe some other time Naruto." You ruffled his hair. "How about I buy you a bowl of ramen?"
His eyes lit up, a wide smile crossing his face, "Really Sis?! You're the best! A pork ramen please!"
You laughed, "You heard the man." You looked over Naruto's head at your date, a smile on your face. He grinned back at you.
Iruka told you many times that was the moment he knew he was in love with you. You were so kind to Naruto that day, you weren't even mad at the boy for interrupting your date. Your arm tighten around his waist, causing him to stir. "Sorry...," you muttered, "I didn't mean to wake you."
Iruka rolled around in your grip, wrapping his arms around your smaller form. "What time is it?," his voice was laced with sleep.
You shrugged as you buried your face against his chest. "2am?"
"Why are you still awake?" He already knew the answer."I'm going to miss you..."
He sighed, "I know." Iruka brushed a kiss against the top of your head. "I will as well." He let out a yawn, "When I get back, why don't we go to Ichiraku to grab dinner?"
You kissed his chest, "I would never turn a date down from you."
The corners of his lips tugged up, "That's good to know." He slipped an arm underneath your pillow, using the arm around your body to pull you closer to him. "Get some sleep, I need you to see me off tomorrow."
"I wouldn't miss it."
Morning came too fast for your liking as you stood next to Naruto, who insisted on bidding his teacher good luck.
Iruka placed a kiss on your forehead, "I love you," he whispered as he pulled away.
You nodded, trying to hold back your tears. "I love you too..."
"Don't you worry, Iruka-sensei!" Naruto fist pumped the air. "I'll take good care of Sis while you're gone! Believe it!"
Iruka laughed, patting Naruto on the head, "Thank you Naruto."
Naruto grasped your hand as Iruka and his team left the village, "Don't cry!" He sent you his trademark grin, "Iruka-sensei will be back in no time!" He tugged at your hand, "Let's get some ramen! You still owe me a date!"
You chuckled, wiping at your eyes, "Alright Naruto, let's go."
