A/N - This is my first story, so I hope you like it! I will try to post everyday. P.S. It might just be me, but the spacing is weird for some reason, sorry about that!
Summer sighed, tapping her pencil against her desk, trying to focus on the equations scrawled on the whiteboard. Math was never her favorite, but with finals approaching, it felt as crucial as anything else. She stole a glance at Miles, who sat two rows over, his attention only half on the teacher. His dark hair fell over his forehead, and the hint of a smirk played on his lips as he doodled in his textbook.
The teacher, Ms. Hawthorne, droned on about simplifying expressions, her voice blending with the rhythmic ticking of the clock. Just as Summer began to lose herself in her thoughts about Miles-wondering if she should hint at the possibility of them going out for ice cream after school-the room grew cold. Shivers danced down her spine, and something in the air shifted.Ms. Hawthorne's image flickered for a moment, and Summer squinted, trying to focus. Her teacher's features twisted unsettlingly, shadows creeping across her face, transforming her into something monstrous. The class gasped as Ms. Hawthorne extended a clawed hand, revealing glimmering fangs, her eyes now burning with an unnatural fervor. Summer had learned about these in Greek class. It was an empousa.
"Miles," Summer whispered, panic creeping into her voice. He turned, mischief evaporating from his expression as realization dawned on him.
Before he could react, the empousa lunged, fangs exposed and ready to strike a classmate. The air around Summer crackled with urgency. She could feel the heat within her, the pulsing energy of her powers. Instinct took over as she thrust her hand forward, summoning light. Brilliant rays exploded from her fingertips, bathing the classroom in golden brilliance."Get back!" she shouted.
The light surged toward the empousa, and in an instant, she dissolved into shimmering golden dust, scattering in the air like sparkling confetti. The classroom fell silent, disbelief etched on every face.
"M-magic?" one student stammered, eyes wide.
"Summer!" Miles exclaimed, a mixture of awe and concern flooding his voice as he approached her. "How did you do that?"
"I don't know!" she gasped, breathless. "It just happened. I didn't even know I could-"Before she could finish, the door swung open with a loud bang, cutting off her words. A boy stood at the threshold, his black hair tousled and sea-green eyes glimmering with urgency. "Did I miss the party? Because I've got a feeling things are about to get interesting," he said, a wry smile breaking across his face.
"Who are you?" Miles asked, his expression shifting from surprise to curiosity.
"Luke Jackson," he replied, stepping into the room, his gaze darting to the golden dust settling on the floor. "And we need to head to Camp Half-Blood, like, now."
"Camp Half-Blood?" Summer echoed, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion. "What's happening?"
"Monsters are reforming again," Luke explained, his tone serious. "And it seems you two just made quite an impression on one of them. That empousa was sent here for a reason, and we don't have time to waste. Grab your things."As students began to murmur and gather their belongings, Summer glanced at Miles. "Do you think we should go? I mean, I just..."He nodded, determination flaring in his eyes. "If they're after us, we can't stick around."She took a deep breath, feeling a newfound surge of confidence alongside her apprehension. She trusted Miles.
"Alright," she agreed, turning to Luke. "Lead the way."
