Leo Diavolo
It was around 7 in the morning when I woke up from an unintended nap, my body finally succumbing after 2 sleepless nights. I groaned and lifted my head from my hand that was resting over a pile of files that needed my signature before any further action could be taken by my men. Pushing the papers aside, I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the work desk and holding my face in my hands.
A yawn escaped me, my eyes involuntarily closing from exhaustion. Running a hand through my hair, I reach out for the glass of whiskey from the previous night and gulp down the warm liquid down in one go. The taste was repulsive but I still managed to finish the whole glass. Placing the glass back on the table, I picked up my phone and started sifting through my messages. After a few minutes I forced myself back to work, tackling the remaining stack of papers on my desk one by one.
It was barely ten minutes into the task but it felt like an eternity. My concentration waned when my consigliere, Dante, entered my office. He looked sharp as always, dressed in a well-fitted suit, his dark hair neatly styled. "What would you like me to do with Luca Fabrizio?" He asked "Do you want Emilio to take care of him or would you rather do it yourself?" He added.
{Translation: Consigliere is a member of the Mafia family who serves as an advisor to the leader and resolves dispute within the family}I stood adjusting my suit "I'll take care of him myself, where is he?"
"In the interrogation room three" Dante replied stepping aside as I walked passed him and he followed behind me and I asked "Has he given any information about the missing shipments that were handed over to him last week?"
"Not yet, he keeps saying he doesn't know" he replied to me, I clenched my Jaw in anger.
The house was eerily quiet with only a few of my men active and awake, the rest were either away to visit their family or asleep. We made our way down to the dimly lit hallway to the foyer which led to the basement stairs. The basement housed an indoor shooting range, a gym, a weapon's room, storage and then spacious interrogation rooms that doubled as prison cells.
Dante walked Infront of me opening the door to interrogation room three and walked in and I followed closely behind him shutting the door behind me and I observed Luca. He hung from the ceiling his hands fastened to the chains and his legs barely reaching the floor. He looked badly bruised as he had been beaten up by my men multiple times, his right eye was shut and most bones appeared broken.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Emilio standing in the dark corner of the room, twirling a knife, his attention solely on the shape blade.
Sliding my hands into my pocket, I walked towards Luca my eyes circling his body, intimidating him "What happened to my shipments that were assigned to you?" I demanded, stopping Infront of him.
"I..I don't know. I promise" he stuttered, his voice a jumbled mess as he struggled to lift his head to look at me.
I narrowed my eyes, demanding a proper answer. Pulling my gun out of my waistband, I pressed it against his temple. "Please...please don't... don't kill me" he begged, clasping his hands together as if praying to a deity. "I..I honestly don't know...I dropped it off to Mr. Ciaro like you asked...please don't...don't kill me" Tears spilled from his emerald green eyes.
"Well if you actually dropped it off with him we wouldn't be here, would we?" I asked logically, my patience wearing thin. "Tell me where it is or I will blow your fucking brains out!" I asked him angered.
"Please I...I have a family to take care of...I have a wife and...and kids, please don't--" Before he could finish I pulled the trigger, his head jerking back as his lifeless body hung from the chains, blood dripping onto the concrete floor, the gunshot echoing in the quiet room.
Lowering my gun, I slipped it back into its holster "Get this place cleaned up" I ordered Dante as I stepped out of the room.
I headed back upstairs, running a hand through my hair. I was barely able to keep my eyes open and needed something to boost my energy. As I poured myself a hot coffee, my mind churned through the issue of the missing shipments, the headache intensifying. This was unprecedented; I had a plethora of men ensuring the smooth operation of every shipment, for this to happen was just utterly bizarre.
Dante and Emilio joined me in the kitchen. Dante took a seat at the bar stools by the kitchen island, while Emilio leaned against the wall, his hazel eyes focused on me.
"What would you like me to do?" Dante asked, breaking the growing silence.
After a slight pause I finally spoke up "Get Piero to find my missing shipments and what the fuck went wrong" Dante nodded and left.
Piero Aldo was exceedingly brilliant. He had graduated High School at a young age and attended one of the best universities in the country. He flew onto my radar when he accidentally hacked into the Russian database, warning him a two-year jail sentence. Since his release, he has been working for me.
Emilio stared outside the window, looking bored "Emilio, find my fucking brother" I ordered, and he also left.
Finishing my coffee I dropped the cup in the sink and headed to my room upstairs. My room was dark, cold and permeated with the scent of the cologne I used daily. The closed shutters made the room more darker.
As I lay in my neatly tucked bed, my phone vibrates in my front pocket and I let out a frustrated grunt, I reached for my phone in my left pocket, getting it out to see a text from my sister, Gianna.
Gianna was different from me and Alex. Unlike us she hated bloodshed, violence and in general, everything related to the mafia, she despised it. Her dream was to become an artist but unfortunately my parents pushed her to become a doctor because of how smart and calm she was. She still liked being a doctor either ways because she could save lives in stark contrast to our- well my world. Her hatred for our lifestyle showed in her refusal to violence, yet she never turned her back on us. She made me question my choices and the nature of our existence and for that, I both loved and envied her.
Gianna: Are you free? I need to ask you something
Me: What is it?
Gianna: Well, my graduation is next week Friday, and I was wondering if you and Alex would be there.
Me: I'm not sure if I can make it. Something came up and I have to take care of it.
Gianna: Ok. What abt Alex?
Me: I have no idea where he is, I've been texting and calling him for days but he hasn't responded
Gianna: Is he ok? What if he's hurt?
Me: He's ok don't worry about it, I sent Emilio to go look for him, I'm sure we'll find him soon.
Gianna: Ok If you say so, let me know when you find him
Me: Sure, I will
Gianna: I've got to head to class now, Bye
Me: Ok👌
After the last message I set my phone down on the bed. Heading to the bathroom, I switch on the lights, lazily kicking the door closed with my foot before starting to strip. Stepping into the shower, I turn the faucet to the right, letting the water cascade down my hair, neck, shoulders, back and finally the back of my legs. After a while I step out of the shower dry up and dress up in a dark blue suit with a white shirt and sleep on a Rolex watch and a few rings.
Leaving my room, I shut the door behind me and start going down the stairs as laughter and cheers echoed from downstairs. Peering over the railing, I saw my men gathered around, surrounding something- or someone.
