The party is in full swing, the sound of laughter and music filling the air. Kerim has gone all out for my birthday, inviting what seems like half the college. It's his way of showing he cares, but for me, it's overwhelming.
I stand in the corner, trying to blend into the background. People are everywhere, chatting, dancing, and having a good time. But all I want is to disappear. Being an introvert at a party like this feels like torture.
Kerim is at the center of it all, effortlessly charming everyone around him. He's surrounded by a group of girls, laughing and talking animatedly. I can't help but feel a twinge of something—jealousy? No, it's more like longing. Longing for the ease with which he navigates social situations, for the attention he gives so freely to others.
Feeling a knot tighten in my stomach, I slip out of the room, unnoticed. Outside, the cool night air is a welcome relief. I find a bench in the garden and sit down, breathing in the silence. The stars are out, twinkling against the dark sky, and for a moment, I feel a sense of peace.
My thoughts swirl, a mix of gratitude and discomfort. Kerim has thrown this party for me, wanting to make my birthday special. Yet here I am, hiding outside, unable to enjoy it. It isn't his fault. He can't understand how overwhelming it all is for me.
"Mouse, there you are!" K calls out. "Finally, you made it. I was just about to call you. Look, just like you wanted, this party doesn't scream 'birthday'—no cake, but I couldn't avoid the gifts. Everyone knows it's your birthday, so gifts were kind of mandatory. I tried my best, though."
"It's okay," I say looking around at the busy crowd.
K instantly grabs the attention of all the young men and women out there. "Ladies and Gentlemen", he started and pulled me onto the mini stage.
"Thank you all for joining us to celebrate the birthday of the one and only, Hayaat.
Hayaat, today is your special day, and I want to take a moment to let you know just how much you mean to me. But don't worry, I won't get too sappy—okay, maybe just a little.
First, let me say that you are the best friend anyone could ask for. You've been my partner in crime, my therapist, and my personal comedian all rolled into one. Remember that time we decided to bake a cake and ended up with something that looked more like a science experiment gone wrong? Yeah, you make even the most disastrous moments fun.
You've been there for me through thick and thin, whether we're binge-watching our favorite shows or navigating the ups and downs of life. You always know how to make me laugh, even on my worst days. Your sense of humor is one of the many things I love about you—well, that and your ability to turn any situation into an impromptu dance party.
You have the biggest heart, and your kindness and generosity never cease to amaze me. You're always there with a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or a hilarious meme to lift my spirits. You're truly one of a kind, and I am so lucky to have you in my life.
Today, we celebrate you—your incredible spirit, your infectious laughter, and your unwavering friendship. I can't wait to see what this year brings for you, and I'm excited to be by your side through it all, probably laughing way too hard at our own jokes.
Happy birthday, Hayaat. Here's to many more years of laughter, love, and unforgettable memories. You're the best, and I love you more than words can say."
I couldn't see Kerim clearly. My eyes blurred as tears welled up, hesitating between spilling over or staying within. Ultimately, they chose to stay, reflecting the emotion of the words he chose for the speech. I could do anything for him, anything but break his heart.
I hugged him, forgetting the numerous eyes that were looking at us. He was my best friend, my brother, and my life.

"I have to head back to the dorm," I tell him.
"Not so early, please. Stay a little longer," he pleads, his eyes radiating with a warmth that's impossible to resist.
"Kerim, please. This is not where Hayaat Kaya belongs," I say gently.
He finally hugs me, holding me close as he bids me goodbye. Whispering in my ear, he says, "Thank you for coming, Hayaat."
"Thank you, Kerim. I really love you so much," I reply softly, my words filled with genuine affection.
