“Announcing the arrival of Maharani Rajeshwari of Indraprastha!”The doors at the far end of the hall opened once more, revealing an elderly woman clothed in a magnificent royal dress of deep crimson and gold. Her every movement exuded grace, and her aura was a unique blend of warmth and power, commanding respect without uttering a word. The way she carried herself spoke of a lifetime of wisdom and experience, and even before she reached the center of the hall, everyone could feel the authority she wielded.
Aadrika’s family quickly moved to greet her, led by her father who inclined his head in a deep bow. Her mother, Rajkumari Gayatri, followed suit, her expression more composed but equally respectful. Even Choti Maa, who rarely showed signs of being overawed, bowed her head in reverence. Aadrika, standing beside them, mimicked her family’s gestures, but her mind was already racing with thoughts.
As Maharani Rajeshwari approached, her warm smile softened her powerful presence, and her eyes sparkled with a kind of maternal pride as she looked at Aadrika. “Rajkumari Aadrika,” she said, her voice rich and soothing, “you are as radiant as I have heard.”
Aadrika bowed deeply, her heart beating rapidly in her chest. “Thank you, Maharani. It is an honor to have you here.”
The Maharani extended her hand, resting it lightly on Aadrika’s head in a gesture of blessing. “May you be blessed with wisdom, strength, and happiness, dear child. I have long awaited the day I could finally meet you.”
They were soon escorted to a private sitting area, away from the bustling crowd.
The private area was adorned with plush cushions and tapestries, creating an intimate space amid the grandeur of the palace. The family took their seats, with the Maharani sitting closest to Aadrika, her eyes never leaving the young princess. The conversation began with pleasantries, as the Maharani inquired about Aadrika’s well-being, her education, and her experiences so far. Aadrika responded politely, but her mind was still trying to piece together the puzzle.
“You carry yourself well, Rajkumari. Your reputation does not do you justice.” Maharani passed her a soft smile reflecting warmth.
Aadrika felt a surge of pride at the compliment, but she kept her composure. “Thank you, Maharani. I hope to live up to the expectations of my family and kingdom.”
Maharani Rajeshwari gave a small nod of approval. “You have a long path ahead of you, Aadrika. But I see potential in you—a strength that will serve you well in the future.”
She reached into the folds of her saree and produced a small, intricately carved box, which she handed to Aadrika. “A gift, to mark the beginning of your journey.”
Aadrika accepted the box with both hands, bowing again in gratitude. She could feel the weight of the moment, the significance of this interaction. “Thank you, Maharani Rajeshwari. I will cherish this always.”
With another nod, Maharani Rajeshwari turned her attention back to Aadrika’s parents, engaging them in conversation as the tension in the room eased slightly. The guests resumed their murmured conversations, though their eyes frequently darted back to the formidable Maharani.
Choti Maa, who had been standing nearby, placed a comforting hand on Aadrika’s shoulder. “You handled that well, Aadrika,” she whispered, her eyes filled with pride. “Maharani Rajeshwari’s approval is not easily earned.”
Aadrika nodded, feeling the weight of the moment settle in. This was more than just a birthday celebration; it was a test.
And then, as the conversation shifted subtly, Aadrika began to realize the truth. The way Maharani Rajeshwari spoke about her family, the gentle but knowing smile that appeared when she mentioned her grandson—Aadrika’s heart skipped a beat. The realization struck her like a bolt of lightning. This was the woman whose grandson was arranged to marry her.
As the Maharani spoke, Aadrika’s thoughts began to spiral. She’s my future grandmother-in-law… The idea of marriage, something that had been mentioned to her, suddenly felt very real and very close. The prospect of it made her stomach churn. But this was the first time it had felt tangible, like a thread of her future pulling tight around her.
The Maharani continued, oblivious to Aadrika’s inner turmoil. “My grandson, Abhiraj, has heard much about you, Aadrika. He’s quite eager to meet you when the time is right. I am certain the two of you will get along splendidly.”
Aadrika forced a smile, her mind racing for an escape. I can’t let this happen, she thought, panic rising in her chest. She had dreams, aspirations that didn’t involve becoming someone’s wife, especially not as a pawn in a political alliance. But how could she voice that to someone as powerful as the Maharani without causing offense?
She needed to deflect, to steer the conversation away from marriage without arousing suspicion. “Maharani Rajeshwari,” Aadrika began, choosing her words carefully, “your grandson must be quite remarkable, given the stories I’ve heard about him. But I must admit, my mind has been entirely occupied with learning more about our kingdom’s history and how I might better serve our people in the future. There is so much to learn, and I feel that I have only just begun.”
The Maharani’s eyes sparkled with interest. “Ah, a thirst for knowledge is a good sign in a future leader. It’s rare to find such dedication in someone so young. But do not worry, my dear; there will be time for everything in due course. The responsibilities of a princess are vast, but they also include the duty of building strong alliances—through marriage and other means.”
Aadrika’s heart sank as the conversation circled back to the very topic she had hoped to avoid. She couldn’t push too hard against it, not now, not in front of her family and the Maharani. She needed time to think, to find a way out of this without causing a scandal or disrespecting her elders.
“I appreciate your wisdom, Maharani,” Aadrika said, inclining her head respectfully. “I will keep your words in mind as I continue my studies and preparations.”
The Maharani gave a gentle nod, her expression warm. “You are a bright young woman, Aadrika. I have no doubt that you will make wise decisions for your future.”
Aadrika smiled, but inside, she felt a storm brewing. This was not a battle she could fight openly—not yet. But she would find a way. She would not let her life be dictated by others, no matter how powerful they were. As the conversation shifted to lighter topics, Aadrika’s mind was already working, thinking of ways to delay, to deflect, and ultimately, to escape the fate that was being laid out for her.
The celebration continued around them, but Aadrika was no longer fully present. Her resolve had hardened, and she knew that the path ahead would not be easy. But she was determined. This was her life, and she would fight for the right to live it on her own terms.
As the night wore on and the guests began to disperse, Aadrika’s thoughts remained fixed on one goal: she would find a way to stop this marriage, she have to.
