Chapter 1

Your POV

My little brother, Gage, has been missing for two years now. Everyone else thinks he's dead by now. But not me. I will find him no matter what it takes. He's not dead, I refuse to believe it. Everyone thinks I've gone crazy, but I don't care.

"Abigail, time for dinner, dear!"

"Ok, Mom!"

I head downstairs to see that my mom has made my favorite food, Jambalaya.
My mom has a worried look on her face.
She's been worried about me lately. She thinks that I just need to accept that Gage is dead. I know he's alive. I just do.

"Abigail, I know you love Gage. I do, too. But he's gone. He's dead. Just let it go..."

"No, Mom! He's alive! We can't give up on him like that! We have to find him!"

"Abigail, he is dead."

"Stop saying that! He IS alive!"

My mom is silent, knowing she can't make me think that my brother is dead.
She just eats some of the food. I eat my fill, then go back to my room. I cry.
I am the only one who hasn't given up on Gage. I'm his only hope. I have to be.

The next morning, I have an idea. If I'm going to find my brother, I will have to run away. It is the best way to find him.
I have to tell my best friend, Lilly, first.
I want her to know. So, I will go over to her house today. I get to her house and ring the doorbell. She answers the door.

"Abigail! Hi. What's up?"

"I need to tell you something. I'm running away. I have to find Gage."

"You're not going without me. We will find your little brother together."

"You sure you want to come?"

"I am."

I nod, and we start preparing. We get food, blankets, medical kits, water, and anything else we might need. We wait
til midnight to leave. When it becomes midnight, we leave, starting our quest
to find my brother. We don't look back.

"We're going to all Gage's favorite places to look for clues."

Lilly nods, and we set out for his favorite place in the woods. We decided to stay there for now. We can immediately tell that something happened here. All the surrounding bushes were torn apart.
The trees looked the same. But there
was something that felt very wrong.

I just couldn't place it. Then I saw it.
There were lines in the dirt. Almost... like someone was being dragged. I
point them out to Lilly, and we decide
to follow them to see if they lead to Gage.
We follow them deeper and deeper into the woods. They led to another clearing.

We look around the clearing. We find someone, not Gage, but some other boy. He looked like he was 12, and he was tied up to a tree and looked scared.
I run up to him, and untie him. He looked grateful and started talking.

"Who a-are you? Why d-did you untie me? Can I t-trust you?"

"Don't be scared. We won't hurt you. Why were you tied up like that? Did you get kidnapped? Oh, and by the way, my name is Abigail, and this is Lilly."

"Yes... I was kidnapped... My name is Max."

"...Well, Max, if you want to come with us, we're looking for my brother, Gage. He has been missing for two years now."

He nods, and we take him with us. I make sure he feels safe and protected.
I barely knew him, yet I felt the need
to protect him. He needed protection.
He seemed to be happy about
me protecting him like that.
