Charlie bolted from school immediately after the last class, desperate to escape the crowds and gather his thoughts. He needed some fresh air and decided to bike around the outskirts of Amber Hill. It was a necessity. The past day, since hanging out with Holden, had been a whirlwind of emotions. His usual defenses were crumbling, and they were no longer effective when Evan doing... what? What had he done to make Charlie's heart pound like a drum every time he was around? Why did his body betray him so stupidly, simply by Evan smiling?

Charlie rode around for a while until he was exhausted. He stopped at a small park near where the party was going to be and sat down under a tree. Before classes ended, he'd made sure his phone was at least 30% charged. As soon as he turned it on, he was bombarded with dozens of missed calls and messages from his mom. Wright ignored them, swiping them away. There was nothing to talk about. He opened up a social media app and decided to check out his new friends' profiles. Sometimes there's useful information there, and it's always good to be in the know before a party.

Casey's profile was full of photos tagged with various locations. She traveled a lot and loved to party. No surprise there, given her parents' wealth. Her posts always drew a ton of comments, including from locals. Friends would joke, compliment her, and make plans for the future. There were lots of inside jokes that Charlie didn't get, but he could see the gist of it. Like Evan, Casey was popular and people clearly wanted to be part of her circle. She was beautiful, confident, and charismatic... it was almost strange that she and Evan weren't a couple. They seemed like the perfect match.

Looking at the happy, carefree life portrayed in Casey's photos, Charlie felt a deep sense of injustice. It was as if he'd always been missing something, something intangible and elusive, almost like he wasn't real. But he discovered it only now. A longing for love and friendship he'd never known, gnawed at him. And now he wanted it. He wanted to feel even a small part of the happiness those people experienced, the ones taking silly photos, dancing on the beach at four in the morning. The happiness of people who were loved unconditionally. This thought kept creeping into his mind, stirring up feelings of envy or jealousy. Charlie tried to push these feelings away; both were equally unpleasant.

A little more, and he will freak out, want to run away, like a stupid offended girl. Again.

Just as Wright was about to check Evan's profile, a new message popped up. His heart leaped and his breath caught when he saw Holden's name. After a moment, he exhaled and opened the message.

ᴇᴠᴀɴ
Hey-ya. I hope you haven't changed your mind ☺️
Because I really need you tonight. 😅

He had a feeling Charlie was starting to waver. Charlie snorted, horrified to realize he was smiling as he read the message. This is the final stop. No, actually, not yet, it's just approaching, but the train has already picked up speed. Was Birnem right after all? Had he fallen for Evan?

Charlie bit his lip, thinking about what to reply. As the time drew closer, he really was starting to shake and think about running away.

ᴄʜᴀʀʟɪᴇ
I was going to, but then you texted. Are you following me? 🤔

ᴇᴠᴀɴ
Oh no, I've been caught! I'll have to sneak away before you turn around...

ᴄʜᴀʀʟɪᴇ
Nice try, Holden. There's nothing behind me. 😤

Wright glanced around just in case. Maybe Evan really was somewhere nearby.

ᴇᴠᴀɴ
I have magical powers, you know? I can see through anything. You can't hide anything from me!

ᴄʜᴀʀʟɪᴇ
That's arrogant. But after your first message, I'm willing to believe you.
