As the week leading up to the Michigan game intensified, the atmosphere around the Ohio State campus was electric. The Buckeyes were preparing for their most anticipated matchup of the season—the storied rivalry against the Wolverines.
The loss to Purdue still lingered, but there was a renewed focus in the locker room. For Y/n L/n, this game was more than just another chance for the team to redeem itself; it was an opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage.
Y/n had been grinding in practice, working on his agility, his footwork, and his overall game, all while waiting for his moment.
The idea of not playing in the Michigan game, of being on the sidelines during one of the most important games of the season, gnawed at him.
Determined to make his case, Y/n decided to talk to the coaches. After practice one day, he approached Urban Meyer and Ryan Day, who were going over game plans on the field.
"Coach Meyer, Coach Day," Y/n called out, walking up to them with purpose.
They both looked up, noting the seriousness in his expression. "What's up, Y/n?" Urban Meyer asked, curious about what was on his mind.
Y/n took a deep breath before speaking, his voice steady. "I know I'm redshirting this season, and I respect that. But this game—this is Michigan. I don't care if it's for a quarterback kneel at the end of the game, or if I'm just pass-blocking to protect Dwayne. I want to play. I need to play in this game."
There was a moment of silence as the coaches exchanged glances. Y/n could see that they were considering his words carefully.
Ryan Day was the first to respond, a thoughtful look on his face. "Y/n, I understand how important this game is. It's huge for all of us. But you have to understand that putting you in could affect your eligibility. We've been trying to protect your redshirt so you can have a full four years of playing time."
"I know, Coach, and I appreciate that," Y/n replied earnestly. "But this game... I've been dreaming about it since I committed here. I just want to contribute, even if it's in a small way. I'll do whatever it takes."
Urban Meyer nodded, understanding the passion behind Y/n's words. He'd seen that fire in players before—those who were willing to do anything for their team, for their brothers on the field. "You've been working hard, Y/n, and I respect that,"
Meyer said, his tone reflective. "This game is personal for a lot of us. We'll take your request into consideration, but I want you to know it's not a decision we'll take lightly."
Y/n nodded, feeling a mix of hope and anticipation. "I get it, Coach. I just wanted to let you know where I stand. I'm ready to do whatever you need."
Ryan Day placed a hand on Y/n's shoulder, giving him a reassuring nod. "We'll talk it over and see where you might fit in. But remember, whether you're on the field or not, you're part of this team. We're all in this together."
"Thanks, Coach," Y/n said, feeling a sense of relief. Even though there were no guarantees, he was glad he had spoken up. He wanted to be part of the fight, to contribute to the team's effort against their biggest rival.
As Y/n walked away, he couldn't help but feel a surge of adrenaline. The thought of playing in The Game, even if just for a single play, fueled his determination.
No matter what the outcome, he was ready to give everything for his team, for the Buckeye Nation, and for himself.
Y/n knew that technically, he still had some leeway when it came to his redshirt status. Under NCAA rules, a player could participate in up to four games and still preserve their redshirt year.
