On the morning of his eighteenth birthday, Jack Stevens woke to the smell of his favorite pancakes wafting up the stairs. For as long as he could remember, his mother had made these pancakes on his birthday, a small comfort amidst the absence of his father, who had disappeared before Jack was old enough to form memories of him.
As he descended the stairs, the usual birthday cheer was absent from his mother's face. Instead, she wore a somber expression, her eyes red from tears. "Mom, what's wrong?" Jack asked, concerned.
She motioned for him to sit at the kitchen table, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Jack, there's something I need to tell you. It's about your father."
His heart pounded. They rarely talked about his father. "What is it?""Your father didn't leave us. He died," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He was murdered."
The words hit Jack like a punch to the gut. All these years, he'd believed his father had abandoned them. But murder? His mind raced with questions, but before he could ask any, his mother continued."I didn't tell you before because I wanted to protect you. But now you're eighteen, and you have the right to know."
Overwhelmed and needing to clear his head, Jack bolted from the house, ignoring his mother's calls. He ran down the street, the early morning sun blurring through his tears. He didn't notice the car speeding around the corner until it was too late. The impact threw him to the ground, everything going black for a moment. When he came to, the world seemed different. Sounds were sharper, colors more vibrant. And he felt a strange energy coursing through his veins. As he struggled to his feet, the driver of the car rushed to his side, but Jack waved him off, more focused on the newfound sensation spreading through his body. Somehow, he knew he wasn't the same. He had been given something, a power he couldn't yet understand. Determined and fueled by a burning need for justice, Jack decided in that moment to use whatever this power was to find his father's killer and bring them to justice. His eighteenth birthday had begun with revelations and pain, but it would end with a new purpose that would change his life forever.
