Great Britain 1836
Thirteen year old Rosalyn walked down the hallway towards the kitchen. Her emerald green dress swept across the floor and her long black curls moved as she walked. Her gray eyes were full of excitement thinking about her best friend, Genevieve.
She walked in the kitchen smiling as she said, "Hello Gen!"
"Hello Rose," Genevieve answered smiling back. She cried out in anger when she realized she had spilt cake batter on her midnight blue dress full of intricate patterns. As she moved to wipe away the cake batter, her long blond hair went into her father's wine glass.
Rosalyn laughed as she said, "So clumsy you are Gen. Let me help you." Rosalyn walked over to Genevieve to help her wipe off the remnants of the cake batter as Genevieve dampened her hair with water.
"I don't know what I would do without you Rose," answered Genevieve. They both smiled, and started to go into their daily gossip.
"Did you see how Victoria was looking at Nathaniel this morning in church?" Rosalyn asked.
Genevieve replied laughing, "I certainly did! I think she quite fancies him."
Rosalyn giggled as she said, "Yes indeed. Wouldn't it be lovely to fall in love? When I grow older I would like to meet the perfect man. He would be a gentleman with sparkling blue eyes and we would take strolls through the park holding hands." Rosalyn had her hand over her heart as she twirled around the room lost in thought.
"That would be lovely. I would love to dance around a ballroom for hours on end!" Genevieve said as she took Rosalyn's hand, and started to dance around the room.
Suddenly, the perfect idea crossed Rosalyn's mind.
"Gen," Rosalyn said as she stopped dancing. "Wouldn't it be lovely if we were to wed on the same day?"
"Yes, it definitely would! Wouldn't it be even lovelier if we lived next to each other?"
"Yes!" Rosalyn exclaimed as her gray eyes lit up with excitement once again. "Promise me we will always be friends."
Genevieve's soft gray eyes were filled with earnest, "I promise."
Both of the girls started to laugh and dance again. They were so happy in that moment that nothing could bring them down. They had no idea that in years to come sorrow would fill their days.
