Close Calls and Quiet Moments
The battlefield was a blur of chaos and clashing steel, the air thick with the scent of blood and sweat. You and Arlecchino had fought side by side countless times, but this fight felt different—more desperate, more dangerous. The rebels were fierce, driven by a rage that seemed to know no bounds, and they were relentless in their assault.
You had held your ground, matching their attacks with a ferocity of your own, determined not to let them overwhelm you. But in the heat of the battle, when everything was moving too fast, you didn't see the rebel soldier approaching from your blind spot, his blade raised high, aimed directly at you.
Time seemed to slow as you caught sight of the glinting steel, your body reacting too late to stop the strike. You braced yourself for the impact, but before the blade could find its mark, Arlecchino was there, her eyes wide with fear as she shoved you out of the way. The blade sliced through the air where you had been standing just a moment before, narrowly missing you but leaving a deep cut across your shoulder.
You staggered, the pain searing through you like fire, but Arlecchino was already moving, her blade cutting down the rebel who had almost ended your life. The battle raged on around you, but your focus was entirely on her—on the fierce determination in her eyes, on the way she fought as if nothing else mattered but keeping you safe.
When the last of the rebels fell, their bodies littering the ground around you, the battlefield finally fell silent. The adrenaline still coursed through your veins, but now that the immediate danger had passed, the pain in your shoulder was impossible to ignore. You stumbled, the world tilting slightly as the blood loss started to take its toll.
"Hey, stay with me," Arlecchino's voice cut through the haze, filled with a mixture of worry and command. She was at your side in an instant, her hands gripping your arms as she steadied you.
"I'm okay," you tried to say, but your voice came out weaker than you'd intended.
She didn't buy it for a second. "You're not," she said, her voice trembling just a little as she guided you down to sit on the ground. "You're hurt. Let me take care of you."
You winced as you lowered yourself down, your shoulder throbbing with each movement. The wound was deep, and the blood soaked through your clothing, but all you could think about was how close you'd come to losing everything. How close you'd come to leaving her alone.
Arlecchino knelt beside you, her hands moving with a rare gentleness as she carefully pulled away the fabric to get a better look at the wound. Her expression was a mix of anger and fear, though she tried to keep her emotions in check.
"You scared me," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper as she started to clean the wound. "I thought I was going to lose you."
Her words cut through the fog of pain, and you reached out, your hand finding hers and squeezing it. "But you didn't," you said, your voice steady despite the pain. "I'm still here."
She nodded, but the tension in her shoulders didn't ease. "You almost weren't," she said, her voice wavering slightly. "I don't know what I would have done if..."
She trailed off, her eyes focused on her task as she wrapped a clean bandage around your shoulder, her hands trembling slightly.
"Arlecchino," you said softly, waiting until she looked up at you. When her eyes finally met yours, you gave her a small, reassuring smile. "I'm okay. We're both okay. We did it."
For a moment, she just stared at you, as if trying to convince herself that you were really there, that you were really safe. Then, with a shuddering breath, she leaned in, her forehead pressing against yours as her hand gently cupped your uninjured shoulder.
"I was so scared," she whispered, her voice raw with emotion. "I've faced a lot of things, but the thought of losing you... I can't handle that."
You closed your eyes, leaning into her touch as you wrapped your arm around her, pulling her close. "You won't lose me," you whispered back, your voice filled with a quiet determination. "I'm not going anywhere. Not without you."
She let out a soft, shaky laugh, her breath warm against your skin. "You'd better not," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "I won't let you."
For a long moment, the two of you just sat there, holding each other in the aftermath of the battle. The world around you was quiet now, the danger passed, leaving only the soft rustle of the wind through the trees and the steady rhythm of your breathing.
Arlecchino shifted slightly, her hand moving to gently cradle your face as she pulled back just enough to look at you. There was a softness in her eyes, a tenderness that she rarely let others see, and it made your heart ache with love for her.
"I love you," she said quietly, her voice barely more than a breath. "More than anything."
You smiled, your heart swelling at the words. "I love you too," you whispered back, your voice filled with all the emotion you felt for her. "And I'm not going anywhere. Not as long as you're with me."
She nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she leaned in to press a gentle kiss to your lips. It was a kiss filled with all the unspoken promises you'd made to each other, all the fears and hopes and dreams that you shared.
When she pulled back, she rested her forehead against yours again, her breath mingling with yours as the two of you sat in the quiet of the forest, holding each other close.
The world outside could wait. For now, all that mattered was that you were together, safe in each other's arms, and nothing could take that away from you.
