Narrator's POV
An ebony hedgehog with red stripes wakes up after a nightmare about his friend Maria. It is five years after he has woken up from stasis. He still remembers the tragic day when he was sent to earth and lost his friend whom he loved to a bullet wound from a cruel G.U.N. soldier. He goes into a flashback of when they spent hours playing together and learning more about planet Earth. She enjoyed talking about Earth and she wanted to go there when she was cured of an incurable illness called N.I.D.S. Shadow is supposed to be the one who cures Maria that is why he was created in the first place. He believed that was his only purpose in life to cure Maria and make her happy. He loved her so very much. He remembers spending a lot of time on the viewing deck looking at Earth below them. He looks back to see a blonde-haired girl in a blue dress taking a picture of them. He looks at the camera in surprise. She tells him afterward that she took the picture so they can remember this moment in time when they are on planet Earth.
Shadow's POV
I smile at her with love in my eyes. Maria asks me why I am looking at her like that. I answer I don't know. Well she says, we better get back to grandfather or he will be worried about where I am. She doesn't realize that her grandfather knows where she is because she goes to the viewing deck every day. She has to go to the lab because she has to be tested to see if my blood is working to cure. Three days a week the scientists had to draw my blood and give her a blood transfusion to try to cure her. After weeks of trying there is barely any difference since she started, so Gerald Robotnik, Maria's grandfather takes a sample of my blood to test to see why the transfusions aren't working.
After a week or so the Professor tells Maria and me that my blood is chaotic. Maria says I keep going from a normal hedgehog to a super hedgehog. The Professor developed golden rings that he calls inhibitor rings to help stabilize my powers, but the first few days I won't be able to exceed the limit of my powers with the rings on my wrists. Well, that means I'll have to be careful how much I use in training. He tells us that I will become unconscious if I exceed my limit.
A few days later we were on the viewing deck after we had lunch when Maria saw ships coming toward Space Colony Ark. I realized the ships had a G.U.N. logo on them. I quickly take Maria's hand and race to the escape pods to escape because the Professor said that if those ships come here my priority is to get Maria to safety on planet Earth. He will try to escape, so he can still work on a cure for her on Earth even though it's dangerous for her to be on Earth since the air there can increase the progress of her illness. We are on our way to the escape pods when we hear men telling us to stop or they will shoot. I pick Maria up and carry her bridal style. I always wanted her this close to me, but I never wanted it to happen in these dire circumstances. I hear gunshots behind us throughout the different labs with the scientists. I skate faster in my air shoes to the location of the escape pods. We finally reached the room and shut the door quickly. Maria looks traumatized from hearing the gunshots and scientists crying out in agony. She's determined when she sees only one escape pod left. I'm out of chaos energy to use due to my inhibitor rings keeping me from using too much of it.
Maria's POV
I shake with fear after Shadow sets me down in the room and shuts the door. Those poor scientists died because of Shadow and me. I look at the one escape pod left and realize only one of us is going to Earth. Shadow is going to Earth because it's the least I can do after all he's done for me. He won't tell anyone this, but he is terrified of needles because of what happened with a cruel scientist who took too much blood from him. We found out later and grandfather discharged him from working on the Ark. I wouldn't be surprised if he ratted us out to someone important on Earth what is going on with Project Shadow.
