"WHAT?!?"
My voice rang throughout the halls of our house as I processed what Mom had just said. This clearly had to be some sick kind of joke.
Hold on. Let's go back a few minutes.
~20 minutes earlier~
My phone blasted Better Than Revenge (Taylor's Version) by Taylor Swift and although I was tired as I possibly could be, I quickly got out of bed and started singing along.
After the song ended, you broke me first by Tate McRae came on just as it does every morning and I headed to my bathroom to take a warm shower. I barely lather up my springy, burgundy hair with shampoo when all of a sudden, the water turns cold.
"Mom!" I yell. I knew that was her doing the dishes. "Wait until I'm out of the shower to turn on the water!"
"Well, Zo, I had to get your attention one way or another. Please come out of the shower soon. We need to talk." she responded.
I returned to washing myself. Soon, I was done and I stepped out of the shower and wrapped myself in a towel. I entered into my bedroom and asked, "What did you want to talk about?"
"So..." Mom started taking a deep breath. "I know you're against going anywhere during the summer, but I signed you up for a camp." Before I could interject anything, she hurriedly added, "Before you freak out, hear me out. I thought it would be good for you to associate with kids your own age. I'm just trying to look out for your future. With my new job, you're going to have to go to public school and this year is your last year before high school. You have to have friends in high school or your high school experience is going to be living hell. Trust me, I know from experience. So? What do you say?"
"WHAT?!?" I screamed. My head is reeling and I feel like I might pass out. I'm more of an introvert. Add that to having no social skills whatsoever and summer camp is your worst nightmare. This clearly had to be some sick kind of joke, right? "You're kidding, right?"
"Sweetheart, calm down. I know this isn't something you wanted, but I just want you to try this for 3 days and if you absolutely hate it, you can come home. Okay?" she said hugging me.
"But Mom..." I muttered.
"Zo-Zo, please just try this." Mom practically begged.
I sighed succumbingly and muttered, "Fine. When do I leave and what do I have to pack?"
Mom's face brightened immediately and she was absolutely ecstatic. "Yay!" she exclaimed. "So we have to leave to go in about an hour and I'll print out the list."
My eyes widen. "Mom! Why?"
"Why what?" she asked absolutely oblivious.
"You waited until la- You know what? Just go print out the list and bring it back here and I'll get ready."
"Mm-kay." She left to go print out the list for camp.
I got dressed into a tie-dye shirt and dark blue denim shorts with my black high-top platform converse and when Mom returned with list I packed my stuff.
~45 minutes later~
I was completely packed and Mom and I were going over the packing list. We were finally almost done.
"Your pillow?" she asked.
"Check." I responded.
"Swimming suit?"
"Check."
"Flip-flops?"
"Check."
"Sneakers?"
I snickered. "On my feet."
"No, not the Converse. The other sneakers."
"Ohhh.... Yeah, I have those."
"Good. Um... Crocs?"
"Check."
"Water shoes?"
"Check."
"A pair of heels?"
"Check."
"A spare pair?"
"You're really making me bring two pairs of heels to camp?"
"Yep."
I sighed exasperatedly and shove the spare pair of heels in my bag of shoes. "Check."
"You have products?"
"Huh?"
"Products? You know like period..."
"Ohhh... Of course I do."
"Did you pack two fancy dresses? Just in case?"
"Of course I did. You literally wrote it down on the paper."
"Okay, makeup and skincare?"
"Check."
"Your MP3 Player and earbuds?"
"Check."
"Your epipen."
"Check."
"I think that ever- Your diary!" She gestured to my diary that had been laying on the table.
"Omg, thanks so much, Mom. I don't know what I would've done without it." I grabbed it and put it in my bag.
"You're welcome. Now, that's everything, so let's hit the road."
I loaded my bags into the trunk and we were on our way.
This is going to be an interesting summer, I thought to myself.
I knew that. I just didn't know that it would change my life forever.
