Today I'm meeting Scarlett at Mary's Bagels for our first date, I didn't call it a date when I asked her but it is a date. I'm also looking after my friends daughter today who's like three months because it's her friends birthday and I couldn't say no. I don't have Scarletts number to tell her so hopefully she won't get angry.
I park in the parking lot and turn the engine off, luckily Lilee sleeps through anything. I get out of the car and walk around to the back "where here, let's go" I take the seatbelt from around her and stroke her tiny miniscule hand. Her whole hands grips onto my index finger making my heart swell "Lilee" I whine trying not to cry and pick up the car seat.

I attach it to the buggy and put my bag in the basket under it and lock the car "let's gooo". I push her up the curb and down the street to Mary's Bagels , everyone kept looking at me which is weird. Maybe it wasn't me they were looking at, instead the baby. I open the door and the bell rings, I look around seeing Scarlett and smile. She looks slightly confused but moves a chair away to make space for the pram. "Hey" "hi" we hug and she looks at Lilee "and who's this little cutie?" She asks and rubs the baby's cheeks "this is Lilee but she isn't mine. God no she isn't mine" Scarlett laughs "her mom's at a party so I was the only person who can look after her and I didn't have your number to reschedule" "oh thats fine. I can give it to you now though, where's you phone?" I unlock it and pass it to her. I check lilees safe and calm and then sit down "all done" she hands the phone back to me and I look at the contact

I look up at her and laugh "why's the emojis?" "Because black widow and Scarlett. I know it's not the colour Scarlett but it's close enough" "oh ok that makes a bit more sense. Have you been waiting here long?" She shakes her head "no only like five minutes. Do you want to order?" "Yeah". I get up from the table "I'll order, you look after the baby. What would you like?" "Umm a cinnamon bun and a lemonade please" she smiles and goes over to the counter. I lean on the handle of the buggy and watch Lilee "what do you think? Is she nice?' I ask brushing my fingers over her nose. Scarlett comes back from the counter and sits opposite me "where's Rose today?" I ask sitting up "oh she's gone to France, her dad's french" "oh nice. Tell her to bring me back eclairs" Scarlett smiles looking down at her hands that are playing together "is this a date Em?" I shrug "well I thought it could be but you can choose" "no no that's fine". I move my hair over my shoulders "I'm going to Afghanistan in a month. I thought you should know" her expression changes from happy to sad "how long are you away?" "Two months. It's just a military operation so nothing too dangerous" Lilee starts fussing in her pram. I look over at her and see her big brown eyes "hey, what's wrong?" I ask and left her out. I take her little hat off but keep her wrapped in the blanket "are you hungry?" I take the bottles out from below the pram "I can get some water for that" "are you sure?" Scarlett nods "of course" "thanks". I cradle Lilee in my arms and take out her dummy causing her to cry more "ssshhh, it's coming. It's coming" I coo and look behind me to see where Scarlett is. "Here" she puts the bottle on the table and I pick it up "thanks so much" "your welcome. It's the right temperature I checked" i hold it against lilees lips and she takes it right away. Well that was easy.
Our food and drinks finally arrived, Scarlett ordered a sausage roll and raspberry soda which actually smells really good. "Would you ever think about leaving the army?" She asks and I stop drinking my lemonade "uhh maybe, I don't know. I like my job and the fact that I'm helping people by doing it but if I had priorities at home like looking after my mom for example or if had other commitments than yeah, probably". Lilees fallen back to asleep in my arms but I don't want to put her in the stroller because she's so cute. I look back up at Scarlett "you look lovely by the way, what are you wearing?" I ask, Scarlett blushes and smiles "thanks, you do to. H&M and Dior" "right of course, wouldn't expect you to be wearing Primark" we laugh making Lilee fuss in my arms. I sigh and rub circles on her cheeks making her fall back to sleep "does that always work?" She asks and I shrug "don't know but it is for now thank god". I take a sip of my lemonade "mm when I tell people I'm in the army they don't expect me to look like this. They expect masculine and short hair. That's what our economy has come to and it's not right. Before I die, I'd like to show people that woman can be in the army without the masculine stereotype" Scarlett nods slowly "that's a good accomplishment, I'm sure you'll be able to do it" she smiles looking down at my neck. I've been seeing her eyeing it at the party and now here.

Scarletts pov We aren't talking right now and I've been wanting to ask Em what the ring is on her neck. I've been glancing at it for ages and I think she's only just caught me looking at it. "I've been meaning to ask you where your necklace is from" she nods and holds it with one hand, she doesn't smile or do anything, just looks at the table "Im not ready to talk about it" I smile softly "that's okay. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked, it's nothing to do with me" she looks up "no it's fine, everyone questions about it, I just tell them all the same thing until I'm ready" "and so you should". Emily stands up from the chair "I need the bathroom, do you think you could watch her for me?" "Yeah of course. I love babies, give her here" she smiles and lowers her in my arms "what's her name again?' I ask looking at Em "Lilee". She goes to the bathroom and leaves me and Lilee alone, the rearrangement must have woken her up because her big brown eyes are open. "well your just a cutie. I like your eyes, their very brown" I coo and Lilee raises her hand and holds my necklace "you like jewellery. I do to, do you think we can be friends?" She smiles making my heart burst. She's got no teeth so it's a very gummy and cute smile. I tickle her tummy making her babble, oh my god this kid.
Emily's pov I come back from the bathroom and see that Scarlett and Lilee are having alot of fun together. Even lilees laughing. I sit back in my chair and Scarlett looks up "do you not want her back?" She asks "nah she's having more fun with you" she smiles. I look in my bag and pull out Scarletts tiny present "I got you something extra for your birthday. Don't get excited because it's not very exciting" I slide it over to her "em you didn't need to get me anything yet alone two things" she picks it up with one hand and opens the paper. She takes them out of the bag and smiles "their soldier earings' I tell her laughing, she takes them out of the bag and I watch as a smile grows on her face "I love them. Thank you so much. Now I can wear you everywhere" I laugh "but as a man of course. You can't even get female soldier earings" "yes as a little man".
We finish in the cafe and we stand outside "what now? Unless you have something to do?' Scarlett asks and I shake my head "nope nothing" she smiles "how about a walk in the park?" I nod "sure. Hopefully there's no Dino's" she frowns confused "you know, Jurassic world. It's like taking a stroll in the park, 65 million- doesn't matter, let's go". I push the stroller to the edge of path and then we cross the road "you should have kept Rose, there's a little playground" I tell Scarlett as we enter the park "oh yeah". Lilees looking up at the trees as we walk through the park "do you have any films coming up?" Scarlett smiles "I do actually but it's a secret so I can't say what it is because I might fired" "fair enough. I can't tell you where my base is because I might get prosecuted" "actually Lizzie told. Fort MacArthur" I sigh "well Lizzie's going to get prosecuted then" Scarlett laughs.
We stand Infront of the lake and look over the water "do you think today went well?" Scarlett asks, I finish tieying my hair up "yeah, do you?" She nods with a wide smile "I do. I'm not going to ask you to be my girlfriend because I know it's way too early for that but would you like to come over to my house tomorrow? I've ordered a giant pizza and snacks so if you don't come then I'll have to eat all by myself" I rub my forehead "uh yeah, tomorrow sounds great. I'll bring popcorn" she smiles "great!"
