'Mohan, are you okay?!'

'I'm fine, Sir ... ' Inspector Mohan clutches his bleeding abdomen. 'I tried to stop them ... but S-Suraj shot at me ... his Ambassador was parked in front of that house. I think they moved across terraces and got down from there. By the time we realized, t-they were already in the car ... Bhaskar gaya hain unke peeche, jeep mein ... '

'What were you all doing?!' Amarnath swivels toward the constables, glaring.

The constables look petrified.

'WHAT WERE YOU ALL DOING?!!' he thunders. He had strategically positioned policemen at three points around the street corner. There was no way they could escape gunshots from those angles.

'We tried to stop them, Saab ... ' The constable stammers. 'B-But ... JC Saab announced not to fire ... Saab, aap jaante hain na ... JC Saab is very strict ... '

'So you feel I'm not strict and you can do whatever you want??!!' Amarnath almost sounds murderous.

They blink at the ground, cowering in fright. Amarnath's car is brought to a halt in front of them. Inspector Mohan pulls the back door open for him.

Amarnath looks at Inspector Mohan's black Yezdi bike and gets on it. 'Key?'

Mohan hesitates. 'Sir, aap ... '

'Just give me the key!'

'Sir!' he fumbles in his pocket and hands over the bike key.

Amarnath pulls out the corded walkie-talkie from the bike handlebar.

'Inspector Narayan, come in!'

'Inspector Narayan, Sir!' A voice emerges in response. 'They're on Colaba Causeway! Ham unke peeche hii hain, Sir! Pakad lenge!'

'Behenchod ... ' Amarnath mutters and slams the walkie-talkie back.

'Take Mohan to the hospital immediately!' he says and kickstarts the bike. The headlight forms a beam of bright yellow light in the dark road. He accelerates and zooms ahead. He races along Colaba Causeway, overtaking the vehicles. Seconds later, he spots the police jeep ahead.

Amarnath shifts gears and accelerates again. The wind slaps against his face as he catches up with the jeep.

The white Ambassador is there too, swerving haphazardly past the vehicles. Its tyres screech against the tar road.

Suraj turns back to fire at them. Amarnath's bike and the jeep veer left and right. The inspector fires back from the jeep. One of Suraj's bullets hit the police jeep tyre. The constable frantically tries to control the steering wheel. The jeep swerves and stops at the road edge, barely avoiding the electric pole.

Amarnath slows down the bike and watches as the Ambassador nears the T-junction with bated breath. There is the Wodehouse Road to the left. But the Ambassador continues straight ahead on the main road.

Amarnath swears out loud, smacking the handlebar in chargin. He knows that if they intended to disperse into the dense colonies of South Bombay, they would've turned left. But they went straight; they are headed towards the Gateway of India. Things would turn complicated if they pursued the sea route towards the Gulf.
