Her.
The night was alive, throbbing with a dark energy that seemed to seep into the very marrow of my bones. I stood at the edge of the woods, the ancient trees looming before me like silent sentinels, their gnarled branches twisted into grotesque shapes that clawed at the sky. The air was thick with the scent of earth and decay, mingled with something else, something heady and intoxicating, like the breath of a lover hovering just out of reach.
I shouldn't have come here. Every story, every whispered warning, had told me to stay away. The woods were cursed, they said, a place where shadows moved of their own accord and the line between the living and the dead was as thin as the veil between dusk and night. But the pull was irresistible, a siren's song that had been calling to me for as long as I could remember.
I took a step forward, the damp earth yielding beneath my boots. The world around me seemed to shift, the night growing thicker, the shadows deeper. I could feel it...him...out there, somewhere in the darkness. A presence, ancient and powerful, watching me with eyes that pierced through the night like twin stars.
My heart pounded in my chest, each beat a drum of anticipation and dread. I had heard the stories, the tales of the dark prince who ruled these woods with an iron hand and a heart of stone. No one who ventured into his domain ever returned, or if they did, they came back changed, haunted, their souls fractured by something too terrible to name.
And yet, here I was, drawn to him like a moth to the flame. Perhaps it was the madness that had always simmered just beneath the surface of my thoughts, the hunger for something more than the stifling confines of the life I had known. Or perhaps it was something else, something darker, a craving that I had never dared to voice even to myself.
Another step, and the shadows seemed to shift around me, coiling and uncoiling like living things. I felt a shiver run down my spine, but it wasn't from fear. No, it was something far more dangerous. The anticipation of the unknown, the thrill of stepping into a world that was nothing like the one I had left behind.
Suddenly, the ground beneath me seemed to give way, and I stumbled, catching myself against the rough bark of a tree. The wood was cold under my fingertips, almost painfully so, as if it had been drained of all warmth by the darkness that surrounded it. I could feel the pulse of the forest, a slow, steady rhythm that matched the beating of my own heart.
And then I heard it, a whisper, so soft it could have been the wind, but I knew better. It was his voice, low and dark, curling around my senses like smoke.
"You shouldn't have come here."
The words sent a jolt through me, a mix of fear and something else, something raw and primal that I didn't want to name. I pushed away from the tree, my breath coming faster as I scanned the darkness, trying to find him. But there was nothing, only the shadows and the suffocating weight of the night pressing in on all sides.
"I know," I whispered back, my voice trembling slightly. "But I had to."
A pause, and then I felt it, a touch, so light it was almost imperceptible, brushing against my cheek. I shivered, not from cold, but from the sensation of it, like the caress of a ghost. My eyes fluttered shut, and I could almost imagine what it would be like to feel that touch again, more solid, more real.
"Why?" His voice was closer now, resonating through the air and the very ground beneath me.
I opened my eyes, staring into the darkness, knowing he was there but unable to see him. "Because I've been waiting for you. All my life, I've been waiting for something, someone. And I think it's you."
The silence that followed was heavy, almost suffocating. I could feel my heart hammering in my chest, each beat a reminder of the danger I was courting. But I didn't care. I was tired of waiting, tired of the endless nights spent yearning for something I couldn't even name.
Suddenly, the shadows parted, and he was there, standing before me, a figure of darkness made flesh. He was tall, his body sculpted from the night itself, his eyes twin embers burning with a fire that threatened to consume me. His presence was overwhelming, a force of nature that made the very air vibrate with power.
He took a step toward me, and I found myself rooted to the spot, unable to move, unable to think. All I could do was stare at him, at the perfection of his form, the cold beauty of his face, and the hunger that burned in his gaze.
"Be careful what you wish for," he murmured, his voice a dark velvet caress that sent shivers down my spine. "You may find that the price is more than you're willing to pay."
I swallowed, my throat dry, but I didn't look away. "I'm not afraid," I lied.
He smiled then, a slow, dangerous curve of his lips that promised both pleasure and pain. "You should be."
And with that, the world around me shattered, the darkness rushing in to claim me as his. I felt his hands on me, cold and firm, pulling me into his embrace, and I knew, in that moment, that nothing would ever be the same again.
But even as the shadows closed in, as his touch sent lightning through my veins, I couldn't bring myself to regret it. For this was what I had been searching for—this was what I had been born for.
To be his
