*Calvin's POV*

As much as I didn't think I wanted to try out today, I'm really happy that I am.

Tuck, Ricky and Colt all tried out with me, and due to the coach knowing that Lane wanted to, he took his game tapes from last year, and is already on the team.

But me?

I thought this would be harder.

Getting through the guys who have years of experience on me.

But god damn, I'd be lying if I said this wasn't easy.

Turns out, I am better at defensive end than I was at wide receiver last year. Being tall and larger, but faster than most, means I'm better at keeping plays within field, and taking down a quarter back.

I like it a lot better than playing wide too.

However, I did not like that I just had to catch a ball before it went flying through a stunt the cheerleaders were doing. And half of them ending up on the ground because of the distraction.

Because here I am, ball in hand, lifting small girls to their feet.

"Thanks Cal." Delilah gave me a small smile as I picked her back up.

"Figured you getting beaned in the head with a football wouldn't be a good thing." I shook my head.

She sighed. "Look, about yesterday, I had no idea you were coming that early or I would've had more time to-"

"None of my business. It's fine Delilah."

"Well I still want to talk about everything, so do you think-"

"I think, if you want to talk to someone, you should go find your boyfriend." I nodded. "I've got to get back." I nodded as I walked back on to the field.

We finished running drills, a few plays, and finally headed to the locker room.

Colt, Tuck, Ricky and I all got out of the shower and to our gym lockers when Cory came walking around the corner of our row.

"Gordon, Hughes, Farr, go some where else." He nodded toward the opening and sat down on the bench in front of me.

"We uh, our clothes are-"

He raised his eyebrows and looked at Ricky, and he instantly stopped talking.

They all grabbed their clothes from their lockers and just ran.

He rolled his eyes and looked at me. "Truitt, let me tell you what, I didn't expect a performance like that in a position you haven't played." He shook his head.

"I just, watched you when you ran your plays." I shrugged.

"I like that." He nodded. "Because I am the only full time defensive end right now, and compared to all the others who tried out, you did the best. So you'll be starting at defensive end."

"I'm only a freshman Cory, and there's guys on the team who-"

"Who don't play the position as well as you do." He shook his head. "You're not the only Freshman starting. Gordon will be starting at wide, and Steve Prince is starting at right tackle. All the upperclassmen knew as soon as you took Foles out your first run."

"Did you ask coach to try me as defensive end?" I raised my eyebrows.

"You're god damn right I did. I saw you play wide last year, but I knew you shouldn't have been there. You were great, but I knew you could do more. And look at that, I was right. You need to realize that you're better than you think you are. Build your ego up kid." He nodded. "But I also wanted to ask you how things went with Delilah this weekend. I saw you talking to her on the field."
