"I've made up my mind; I'm going to join their clan."
Smudge couldn't believe what his friend was thinking. Rusty? A Wildcat? Smudge felt his fur stand on end as he immediately jumped with pinned ears and a desperate look on his face.
"Please don't go, Rusty; I might never see you again." mewed Smudge. His heart had skipped a beat upon hearing the news.
"It's gonna be okay," assured Rusty. "The house folk will adopt another house cat, and you'll get along with them. You get along with everyone!"
"But it won't be the same!" insisted Smudge. "That's just it. If I stay around here, there will be a point where the house folk will take me to the vet." argued Rusty.
Smudge sighed. He knew he couldn't stop his friend from leaving, but he had a funny feeling that it wouldn't end well if they reunited while Rusty was in the wild.
"I'm sorry, Smudge," sighed Rusty, seeing his friend's hurt face. "I'll miss you, but I have to go."
"I understand," Rusty's ear twitched at Smudge's understanding look in his eyes. "I know I can't stop you from leaving. Just be careful in there, okay?" He begged.
Rusty gave a soft nod. "Wanna spend one last morning together?" offered Rusty.
"Thought you'd never ask."
Four years later, Rusty had wished he never left.
