For the umpteenth time, he checked the silver watch around his wrist. He was running out of patience, which was a bit unusual, since he was the kind of person who didn't get easily flustered.
He placed his hand on the table and gazed at the silver ring that gleamed on his ring finger.
He was engaged; it hadn't even been a month and he still somehow couldn't believe it, yet he felt he should be happier. He glanced at the busy city street through the window of his favorite café, where he spent most of his time working. Today, it wasn't about work, or so he hoped.
He perked up when the wooden chair opposite him creaked, and he looked up to make eye contact with his older brother.
“Hi, Sasuke,” Itachi smiled at him, and the younger Uchiha merely nodded in greeting.
“Sorry for being late, on the way I—”
“Don’t say anything, I don’t want to hear it. I assume you picked up these habits from Kakashi,” Sasuke scoffed as he put his coffee cup back on the table. He wasn't even surprised—Itachi and his college professor had once been colleagues.
"I think you're being quite unfair to me," Itachi said, causing Sasuke to roll his eyes.
"So, what do you want? I've been stuck here for almost an hour because of you," Sasuke growled as Itachi ordered the same coffee he had.
The older Uchiha looked at his brother somewhat wearily before trying to find the right words to begin. "It's about me and Izumi," he said finally, but when Sasuke didn't even bother to lift his head, he just sighed.
As always, why am I even surprised? he thought despairingly. Whenever Itachi dared to mention his wife or anyone connected to their family, Sasuke seemed to lose all interest. Despite this, he decided to continue.
"Shisui and Izumi recently talked with our parents, and they want to have a family dinner, just to chat."
"And you're telling me this because?"
At that moment, Itachi didn't know whether to laugh or get angry. "Mom would like to see you... And Dad too, even though he doesn't show it much," he continued to try to persuade him, while Sasuke mulled it over. Then his onyx eyes wandered to his hand, which was gripping the handle of his mug.
"And I guess you have some news?" he raised an eyebrow, and Sasuke realized where his gaze was directed.
"You didn't even tell me; I heard it from Shisui."
Sasuke leaned back in his chair. "I don't think we need to make such a fuss about it," he growled, twisting his fingers and trying to move his hand with the wedding ring out of the other man's reach.
Itachi smirked and shrugged. "Try explaining that to Naruto. That guy has flooded all social media with wedding plans."
Sasuke sighed quietly. Typical Naruto.
That night, Itachi was at the bar with Shisui when his best friend found several new posts on Instagram about Uzumaki and Sasuke getting married. Initially, he was very surprised, but he also wished them well (probably the only one in the family who did). It just hurt a little that Sasuke didn't see any reason to tell him.
"Anyway, we'd be happy if you showed up and feel free to bring Naruto along."
Sasuke didn't know what to say. A family dinner was the last thing he wanted right now. Of course, he wanted to see his mom, Shisui, and even Izumi, but after the fiasco a few years ago when his father found out he was gay, nothing like that appealed to him anymore. It had taken Naruto a lot of effort just to get him to a bar with friends. Moreover, he seriously doubted that his father and uncle would be happy if he showed up, especially with his fiancé in tow.
