I left the shack shortly after I woke up and walked past a little girl and her mother. Her mother was telling her a story that I'd heard many times before, but had never much cared for. "Once upon a time, The God of Death fell in love with a goddess. It isn't known who the goddess is, but we do know that he stole her away to the land of death so she could be his bride. She stayed there for seven days, and made it clear to Death that she wasn't going to marry him. The God of Death let her go and in return she forgave him. However, her brother was enraged and he vowed to curse any children the God of Death would have in the future. He made a solemn vow of revenge, that he would punish Death's descendants harshly until they had gone mad."
I hated this story. I didn't know why or where I'd heard it before but it was familiar and I hated it with a burning passion. There was no moral to the story, no point, just that falling in love was wrong. I didn't think so but then again, I was murdered by my boyfriend not long ago. So what did I know?
I walked past the corner where the girl was huddled with her mother on the bench. I hurried as I walked past them and prepared myself. I walked into Vinny's Tavern and sat down. Vinny was like my father because I didn't have one. Or, well, I did but I didn't know who the bastard was and he certainly wasn't coming back for me anytime soon. Until then, Vinny's my dad. Not a particularly good one, but a dad nonetheless.
"Hey Vinny."
He turned to face me and smiled crookedly, "Hey kiddo!" He motioned to the dented metal chair beside him, gesturing for me to sit.
I sat down beside him, inhaling his woody scent and the stench of the beer in the tavern. He didn't drink, and wouldn't let anyone have more than two beers. Most patrons didn't come here to get drunk but the beer stench still filled the room. He motioned to Liza, the waitress, who grabbed me a root beer with no ice.
She set it down in front of me with a smile "How are ya? How was your trip?"
I guzzled the root beer for a moment, then took a breath and responded "Litzen was cool. The beaches were nice but I'm glad to be back. Thank you Liza."
She smiled. To them, I'd only been gone a week, I went to Litzen a week before the loop began the first time. I barely remember what Litzen even looked like. She nodded, "I wish I could go to Litzen. How'd you even get there?"
"I hitched a ride with a friend of mine. Nila Ren."
