(TW: mentions of self-harm)

Dating takes a lot more work than people think.

It's exhausting, yet it's fun at the same time.

It takes so much energy though.

"And that's why I think we should break up,"

"What?"

"I just don't think it's working out anymore. It's not you, it's me," you explained.

"Alright, I get it...but can we stay friends at least?" he asked solemnly.

"Of course," you smiled at him. You walked home from your now ex boyfriends house and sighed. You didn't want to hurt his feelings, but leading him on when you didn't like him was worse.

You plopped down in your bed, you felt as though all the energy inside you was gone. Life has been pretty tiring lately.

Deciding you were hungry, yout got up but tripped over a few boxes you had left over from moving. All the contents spilled out onto the floor with one specific thing catching your eye.

You smiled, how could you forget about this?

It was an old phone you used in middle  school. You decided to plug it in so it would charge and turn on.

Once it did, you saw your old wallpaper and cringed. You were into stuff like this? You unlocked it and saw yet another wallpaper that made you cringe and question your existence.

"Ew," you laughed out loud.

You decided what better to do than go through your old pictures. After all, you had all the time in world since you left that exhausting relationship.

You laughed, you cried, you mostly cringed.

The memories of your childhood gave you nostalgia.

But you scrolled down far enough to see a picture of you and your other ex.

I lied, you scrolled down to see countless pictureS of you and your other ex.

You remembered him very well.

His name was C/n.

He had e/c eyes, h/c hair, and a great personality.

But most of all, you remembered how happy you were with him.

Going on school trips with him, messing around in classes, hanging out after school, everything else, too.

So what happened?

Your dumbself decided to break up with him since you were going to different high schools.

3 years of dating down the drain because you didn't want to do long distance.

There had to be more to the story, right?

Yes, there was another girl...

Her name was R/n.

She liked him so much, it almost hurt you.

Quite literally hurt you.

"Oh Y/n, guess what C/n did for me? I bet he doesn't do that for you,"

"Y/n, C/n taught me how to play soccer. I fell while trying to pass but he caught me and helped me up! Isn't that sweet of him?"

"Oh, you're dating him? I guess I forgot since we seem more romantic than you guys. After all, he likes me too"

"Y/n, I think C/n is trying to get me to break up with my boyfriend so we can be together. Oh, um, no offense to you of course,"

You looked at your hands. Some of the scars were still visible.

At that time you couldn't take it anymore and scraped your knuckles against a spiky wall. You couldn't stand R/n at all. And yet the more she talked, the more you saw C/n, in your eyes, flirt back with her.

"And that's why I think we should break up,"

"What?"

"Yeah...long distance is...tiring. Trust me, you'll find someone else and maybe you'll be even happier." You told C/n.

"What do you mean find someone else? No one is going to replace you." he grabbed your hands and desperately tried telling you.

You winced, he was touching the scratches from earlier.

"It's okay, you'll find someone. Maybe R/n? I heard she's going to the same school? And I know you're close with her," you forced a smile to make it believable, but inside your blood was boiling.

"Y/n, you're worth everything to me. So if that means long distance, I'm willing to do it," C/n pleaded. You removed his hands from yours and smiled.

"It's over, C/n," and with that you walked out of school.

You told him that on the last day of middle school.

He never knew that conversation still haunted you til this day.

He never knew the real reason you broke up with him.

He never knew you just wanted him to be happy.

But there was so much you didn't know either.

You went to your contacts and put a number into your current phone.

The line rang,

and rang,

and rang,

until finally it picked up.

"Hello?" a boys voice answered, still recognizable to you despite dropping a whole octave.

"Hey, it's Y/n," you answered.
